They waited until it was a mathematical impossibility to finish in the top 4, so they can now pay him out less... Ferguson took the team from 21st to 11th in his first season, while Moyes took them from 1st to, what, 8th? So while it is true that SAF did struggle at the beginning of his career there - and was certainly close to the sack at least twice - Moyes' first season has been much poorer than SAF's.
