If you come here on a permanent visa you are required to get a western Australian licence within 3 months.

If you are in Australia on a temporary visa of any kind (Student, WHV, 457 etc), you can drive on your overseas licence as long as it is still valid.

If you come to Australia on a permanent visa, in every state except Victoria, you must get an Australian licence within 3 months of arrival in Australia (or within 3 months of the visa being granted if it was granted onshore). Victoria gives you 6 months to do the changeover.

If you're a Kiwi, you are treated as an interstate driver and can only drive on your NZ licence for 3 months (in every state including Victoria).

When we arrived 2 years ago in QLD we was told it was 3 months to transfer from Uk to Aus licence .... We transferred within the first month with a temporary address no problems , not sure what we presented as I D but it was very straight forward and easy ..went down to the local office with our Uk licence and and all the ID we had and had no problems.we didn't have to take a test
