Joan Ann Powell
Hi, Has anyone had cataract surgery recently? We might move to northern Tasmania and I wonder how much it would cost to have done privately. We don't have insurance. Preferably, can it be done within the public system and what is the waiting list time, please? Joan
Que Sera Sera
They do it at private hospitals here. The place I went to see about laser eye surgery did it. Not sure about Medicare but I'd assume if you get your gp to refer you, you get in on medicare.
Joan Ann Powell
Thanks (Doris ) I see that you are in WA. I am wanting to know the cost in Tasmania. I'm sure it differs all over the country. Also I am more interested in the IOL surgery, not the laser. Joan
Que Sera Sera
The surgery I went to did corrective short site surgery bit there were lots of other folks there getting cateracts done too. I've just done a quick Google search cateract surgery in Tasmania and a long list has come up. Have a look on their websites. This one looked interesting http://www.cataractcare.com.au/ good luck
Joan Ann Powell
Thanks for that link Que Sera it was the one I had already looked at. Unfortunately, whilst giving heaps of wonderful information no basic costing is given for the IOL surgery. That's why I am hoping to find someone who has already had it done to them in that part of the country. Joan
Petals
My mum had hers done in Melbourne and she had hers done privately and no insurance and it was 2 grand an eye so four grand. If you wait on a list you can have them done on medicare but depends on how many on the list as to how long you have to wait. Also mum wanted to have the specialist of her choice and this way she was able to. If you go public you get the one whose list is that day. Her friend had here done as well privately same cost in a different private hospital.
Joan Ann Powell
Hi Petals, thanks for that. My husband already had one eye done here in Qld - but not done very well - and that cost him near $800 after rebates. A different private hospital in the same town would have been about $300 more. Still want to know about what happens in Launceston. Joan
