Hello again, Where you should live would, I suppose, what kind of work you are hoping to find. As far as I am aware, Tassie is not exactly flush in jobs. But then, very few places are these days. Tradies usually manage to make a good living in most states. I hadn't considered southern Tas as it would be that much colder than the northern parts but the cost of houses is a big factor as far as our move is concerned and I thought I would take a look at those suburbs on the eastern side of Hobart. All I need to do now is find out living costs for the area. I am now quite up to date with the northern parts would run out at annually. Unlike you, we have never even visited Tasmania so not sure what we will find. However, we started out life in Oz in Victoria and gradually (over 40+ years) moved further and further north to where we are now in mid-Qld. As for the temperatures, did you get a look at what the southern states of the country had to put up with this year? Unheard-of highs especially in SA and Vic and for long periods of weeks. In the old days, you got 2 or 3 days around 39º and then a cool change, but not this last year. Hotter than up here in Qld for a lot of the time. Take care and do all the research you can before the move as it will save you money and heartache in the long run. Joan -
Hi Karen, thanks for telling me that. It doesn't sound too bad a cost but thanks in particular for the advice on insurance. Regards, Joan

Hi Karen, that is so helpful and I really appreciate your reply. We would be doing it a little differently. Storing the furniture, shipping us and the car and campervan and living in that whilst looking for a house to buy. Just one other thing if you wouldn't mind, please. Did that include shipping insurance? Joan

Good morning, Hot and steamy up here in Qld today.....yuk. No, I don't think it was spam. The lady said she was a teacher. Perhaps just a coincidence in the similarity of ID names. Have you actually made it to Oz yet? I have posted on the Tasmania board so perhaps something will come of that. Joan -
Thanks Baz. I managed to work that much out for myself. It's actual numbers I'm looking for. I know mine will be different but just need a very approximate idea.

Oh dear, it sounds as though I want to move the state not us - silly me.
-
Hi everyone, Has anyone made a similar move in recent months, please? Just wanting a rough idea of the costs involved. Thanks.

Hi Tastastic, I seem to recall your name inviting me to be a 'friend' on a genealogy forum. However, I didn't continue with it. The lady I'm thinking of is a teacher in Hobart. When I look at the bottom of this page there are links to several boards, but none of them is for Tasmania. Can you please give me a link to it as that would be the sensible place for me to post. Thanks for your reply, Joan -

Hi, Can anyone please give me an idea of the cost of moving a 3 bedroom house full of furniture from the mainland (preferably Qld) to Tasmania. Still in the tentative stages so don't want to actually contact removal companies - we just need a rough idea. Thanks, Joan -
Great information Skani, thanks so much. Do I take it that the rates were for the year? Water isn't quite as bad as I expected. Joan
-
Thanks very much for that. I will go to the site right away. Your niece didn't happen to tell you how much her rates and water are did she? Joan
-
Should have said that was about 6 years ago Joan

Hi Petals, thanks for that. My husband already had one eye done here in Qld - but not done very well - and that cost him near $800 after rebates. A different private hospital in the same town would have been about $300 more. Still want to know about what happens in Launceston. Joan

Thanks for that link Que Sera it was the one I had already looked at. Unfortunately, whilst giving heaps of wonderful information no basic costing is given for the IOL surgery. That's why I am hoping to find someone who has already had it done to them in that part of the country. Joan

Oh Vivien, what a gem you are. Thank you so much for all that information I am now getting a much better picture of life in Tasmania. I will go check the link you've given me this afternoon. Kind regards, Joan
-
Thanks (Doris ) I see that you are in WA. I am wanting to know the cost in Tasmania. I'm sure it differs all over the country. Also I am more interested in the IOL surgery, not the laser. Joan

Hi, Has anyone had cataract surgery recently? We might move to northern Tasmania and I wonder how much it would cost to have done privately. We don't have insurance. Preferably, can it be done within the public system and what is the waiting list time, please? Joan

Hoping someone will be able to help a couple of wrinklies who are considering a huge move from Qld to northern Tasmania. We are on an extremely limited budget so really need to establish the difference in cost of living between the two states. Would a property on tank water a bit out of the city be cheaper than a city suburb? What does it cost to run a heat pump in a 3 brm lowset house? Many houses for sale have wood burning stoves. Is wood available and the cost? Are you allowed to gather fallen wood from roadsides/parks? Can anyone give me specific current rates for their home? Answers to any of the above would be appreciated. Joan

Hi Smiffs, I can only tell you one thing about Berwick, which always used to seem a nice place when we travelled through it. If the wind is coming from the E/SE you will get the pong from the power station at Yallourn. JAP
