Just completes skills assessment - Is the 190 our best option?

My wife has just had her skills assessment completed and confirmed as suitable for migration “For the nominated occupation of 224414 Registered Nurse (Community Health)”….

Originally our plan was to go for a 190 Visa (requiring 60 points) and I thought we would have had way more than 60 points, due to my wife being a fulltime nurse since past her University course 12 years ago.

However, it seems that because she has only been working in the ‘Community Health’ sector for 2-3 years, we only come in at 65 Points.

Just to clarify - my wife is a Specialist Diabetes Nurse and Trainer/educator. And has been so for about 6 years.

We originally planned on the 190 visa because having made such a huge move and having a young family, we (ideally) don’t ever plan to return to the UK.

So my question is – If moving to Australia on a temporary VISA is it quite strait forward to apply for permanent residency once in Australia (say, after 12 months)?

Hi richard, if you can appply for PR now, better apply now rather than waiting for another year.

We never know if there will be any immigration rule changes in the next year. Though nursing is highly in demand, but we never know right...

Hi Thanks for the advice.... Just didn't know if 65 points made things 'borderline' with approval?

Having received the e-mail this morning (from ANMAC) confirming skills select. We are going to lodge our EOI immediately (i understand this could take 10 weeks to be accepted)?

If you have 65 points with state sponsorship, that means that you have 60 points without it. 60 points should get you an invitation for a 189 within a couple of invitation rounds - just check the reports if you doubt what I'm saying. Surely a 189 is better than a 190? No ties to a particular state, no need to wait to get state sponsorship, no need to meet state financial requirements (if that state has them) - seems like a no brainer to me.

Sounds as if you might have been badly advised.

A temporary visa is the last card in the pack for families.

May I suggest you contact a registered migration agent for advice about whether you qualify for a 189?

All experience working in any of the 2544xx nursing disciplines should be able to be considered as 'closely related' work experience for the points test. AFAIK, occupations coming under an ANZSCO major heading are all considered to be 'closely related' for points test purposes. If she has been assessed as a Registered Nurse (Community Health) 254414 but some of her experience has been as a Registered Nurse nec 254499 or one of the other 2544xx occupations, all should be eligible for points. As it happens though, a bare 60 points is enough to get an invitation for a 189 within 2 or 3 rounds - you don't actually need any more than 60 points unless you're desperate to get an invite in the very next round.

And, given that you have a young family, forget about a temporary visa. Apart from their horribly uncertain nature, you get no Family Tax benefits, no assistance with childcare expenses (that alone would be a deal breaker for most families) and in some states, you must pay school fees even for tuition at government schools.
