Medical advice - hearing loss..

Hello all,

i am am just starting the long process of applying for the 189 visa with my family. I am right at the beginning, booked in for my ielts test soon. But I guess I'm just panicking abit ahead of myself and just after some reassurance.

Today I have just been told that I have mild to moderate hearing loss and will need hearing aids! Plus a referral to an ENT consultant, I am only 38 so is abit of a shock.

So my first thought was, is this going to effect me for my medical in Australia? As here in the good old nhs , my hearing aids, batteries, parts, fittings are all going to be free. Is this going to add up cost wise for them over there?

Along with this I suffer from mild depression and am on antidepressants. Other than that fingers crossed I have no other medical issues.

my son has a peanut allergy so has 2 epipens he carries around, and asthma and has a brown and a blue inhaler along with some asthma tablets daily.

i read somewhere that the threshold is $35,000 per annum for medical costs, I don't think both mine or my sons would amount to this...so I am hoping we would be cleared??

Can anyone offer any knowledge of experience to this?? Xx

future need for cochlear implants may be a problem due to significant cost involved. I don't know if you fall into that particular area. it would be interesting to hear from others who have passed / failed medicals with hearing issues though.

if your planning on a medical it may be worth gaining a specialist report from your GP / Consultant to take with you outlining your condition and how it is likely to progress over the five years or longer, As I believe significant cost is based on what you may end up costing the Aussie taxpayer over that period (5 years)

My Wife had a series of ear op's as a Child due to an Osteoma that has left her slightly deaf in one ear so I will be watching this post with interest.

Sorry to hear about your hearing loss. I'm only a couple of years older than you and kept losing hearing in both ears, they said I have lost 10% of my hearing which is normal for someone my age and also they think nerve damage is causing the problem from my major op (long story) thankfully I don't need hearing aids and I know they aren't cheap. Take a look at some of these sites http://www.hearingpro.com.au/hearing-solutions/digital-hearing-aids/hearing-aid-cost and here http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/food-and-health/general-health/conditions/saving-on-hearing-aids.aspx

In regards to anti depressants please don't worry to much about that, there are plenty of members who have got their visas on here and been on anti depressants, as long as you aren't a suicide risk you will be fine. You will probably pay around $37 for a months supply.

Epi pen! this is something I've just had recent experience with when my son got rushed in with a anaphylactic shock. You can buy them over the counter prices range from $100 - $219 so shop around. You may need to see an immunologist over here which costs around $220 but once they agree on the cause they will write you a prescription and you can then get all future epi pens discounted, so we got another 2 epi pens for $37 for both.

If I was you I would get your appointment with ENT ASAP and ask him to write a letter stating whether or not you are going to be a financial drain on the Australian government or if you are going to be able to manage it fine without further investigations etc.

Good luck with everything and please let us know how you go on.

You will have to pay for your hearing aids in Australia unless you are on a pension. If you only need hearing aids and don't require lots of visits to a specialist and operations then you will probably won't be a burden on Medicare so I can't see it being a problem. Get the aids from the NHS ( don't tell them that you may be departing) as they will last a few years and will save you a bit of money.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Some good advice and I will check out those links! I now have my hearing aids! What a pain they are already. I'm seeing the ENT consultant at the end of the month, so will know more then! Fingers crossed it's nothing that is going to cost loads!

X will keep you posted! X

Hi, I know this is an old post, but just wanted to share my news in case it may be of help to others, as there's not much info out there! I am 30, completely deaf, lost my hearing about 4 years ago (unknown cause-probably genetic) and got a cochlear implant in 2012. I've also been on antidepressants for a few years. I have just been granted my 189 permanent residency visa for myself (main applicant - mental health nurse), partner and 3-year old girl, and are heading for the Sunshine Coast in December! At the medicals I was told as I've had my implant a few years and there are no problems with it, just on regular annual checks, it wouldn't be a problem. And they were right! I was very anxious about this as I decided to do the whole application myself, due to financial reasons - despite being told I was a complex case and should really go down the migration agent route. It took approx 8 weeks from EOI to a direct visa grant - obviously not so complex after all!

I know everyone is different but thought this may give hope to some others in a similar situation.

Kymm :cute:
