If you get 7 in each band you will receive 10 points, if you achieve 8 in each band you will get 20 points.

If you are only taking IELTS for points then you can take the general test, but double check if your nominated occupation doesn't need IELTS to pass the skills assessment, for example, nurses need 7s in each band in the academic IELTS. If your occupation doesn't require IELTS, then just sit the general.

To get points for IELTS, you need 8 on each band.

Per http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/189.aspx -

You can receive 10 points for ‘proficient’ English and 20 points for ‘superior’ English. You must provide evidence of:

  • Proficient English: a score of 7 on each of the four components of speaking, reading, listening and writing in an IELTS test, or a score of B on each of the four components of an OET

  • Superior English: a score of 8 on each of the four components of speaking, reading, listening and writing in an IELTS test, or a score of A on each of the four components of an OET.

So, looks like 10 points for score of 7 and 20 points for 8 - or, am I looking into the wrong place?

Thank you - I believe, I might fall into either Developer Programmer 261312 or Software Engineer 261313 category. Is there a link where I can check if these categories require Academic or Generic IELTS?

Im presuming your assessment is through ACS, I had a quick look and can't see a requirement for IELTS, but double check.

Thank you very much for your prompt response - much appreciated!. Yes - IELTS is not required, however I will give a shot at it to get more points. Also found http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/124395-ielts-test-general-academic.html thread which confirms the same. T
