Kezzles Posted January 14, 2014 Share Posted January 14, 2014 hello we are planning to get a short term rental for around 4 weeks whilst we look for more permanent accomodation. When my brother moved to perth he said trying to secure rented accomodation was a nightmare, lots of hell holes and when it was good over 30 other people would turn up to view. Would be rude not to share really ;-) One thing I would say if you're looking at heading over in March - watch out for the leap in short term rental prices during the Grand Prix (13-16 March). I was looking at options for serviced apartments yesterday and the price per night tripled for that week - ouch! Hopefully someone will be along with some more useful advice on the current market pretty soon - I'll be interested to find out too! All the best, still got fingers and toes crossed for both of us! Petals Posted January 14, 2014 Share Posted January 14, 2014 People seem to find rentals reasonably easily. My daughter and her partner moved in Brunswick and they really only looked one day. Lovely small house aircon, central heating 475 a week. Out in the burbs lots of new houses for rent in fact they are talking about an over supply of units in the city. Have a look on realestate.com.au and visit life in victoria forum as people who have just arrived will be able to give you more info than I can. furkew Posted January 18, 2014 Share Posted January 18, 2014 We have had dozens of new arrivals over the last 5 years and they have all found a rental and moved in, in 4 weeks without too much stress. Any shorter means you might make hasty decisions, which you can regret later. At the moment we have new arrivals and they went to a few viewings today and there were a lot of other families viewing which did surprise me a little as it is still summer Hols and school holidays. Do people advise securing a long-term property to rent before you land? Or is it more usual/sensible to find a short-term let and then look around in your early days - before all the stuff arrives from UK - to find your proper home? Thanks for any advice. It is not legal for a real estate agent to rent you a long term rental without you seeing it, so most people get around 4 weeks short term accommodation. I-F Would you trust somebody else to find a property in Australia that you have to commit to sight unseen for 12 months? From our experiences with Australian real estate pictures can make a place look bloody awesome, until you see it in the flesh and you can be up for some big surprises. personally, 4-6 weeks in a short term furnished is cheaper in the long term when you think about the peace of mind finding your own place, and also gives you the opportunity to research areas on arrival, schools etc and not make a mistake by picking the wrong area just by using the internet. if you are looking for 4-6 weeks and are out of season, you will be able to negotiate much better rates than advertised if looking on stayz or similar. Don't be afraid to offer what you might thing is a low ball price for normal holiday accommodation. 4-6 weeks out of season in one booking is very interesting for most property owners. I've not found any such relocation agents, unfortunately (the ones I've found only offer a 'buying' home search), so it looks like we may be stuck with short-term rental, which is extortionately expensive. I've done plenty of research to confirm this, and the only 'cheap' ones I've found were on Air b'n'b which, thus far, has never managed to give me the dates I want. I find a cheap rental but whenever I email the owners for price confirmation (giving a rough date as we don't have a job yet) they say they're fully-booked! So I'm beginning to think Air b'n'b is a waste of time. It's not even like the 'cheap' prices have been too good to be true, either. They've been pretty much the same price as serviced apartments, so I can't understand why they're never available on the dates I want :mad: Maybe I've just been unlucky, who knows... :nah: So when are the high / low seasons then? Thanks :smile: when are you guys looking to move? we don't have high or low season prices because we cater pretty much only for new arrivals, but outside summer & Easter you should normally be able to haggle and get a much better deal for a longer booking. I don't know too much about air bnb but they seem very good for simple accommodation, for a very good price, but as you have already found out, longer bookings can be difficult to fit in. I-F I was a relocation agent down in Melbourne and there was only one agent who would work that way and to be honest, what I like in a property doesn't mean others would. Property moves too fast over here, if they have an open for inspection you could be competing with 20 other families, most already have their application filled out and bring it with them. So there is no way an agent would wait around for a relocation agent to send you a video, then send the application form, then you would need certified copies of ID and you still wouldn't pass the 100 point check so would get penalised for that. If its a rubbish property that's been on the market for months and no one wants then of course they would wait for you to fax everything to them but otherwise forget it.
