Moving to Brisbane: Money + Advice

Hi guys I've been going through threads on this forum and others and help websites etc and am just trying to finalise the numbers so any help and extra tops are more than welcome.

Background:

Me(22) and my gf(26) are moving out to Brisbane on 2nd of march.

I'm an Arborist with tickets and just over a year experience in the industry, some climbing but most ground.

Gf is a personal trainer (Uni degree and other courses).

Based on another thread here and on responses these are the numbers I've come up with based on MINIMUM WAGE. As far as I can tell both of or jobs receive more than that so seems weird that not everyone is living the great life in Oz!

Rent: 600 week(actually looking city apartments more at the 450 mark)

2580 month

Gas: 60

Water: 110

Electric: 140

Broadband: 80

Mobiles: 120

Food: 400

Socialising: 600 (CANNOT imagine this we are not party animals but do like swimming, exercising, running)

Clothes: 300 (Again really seems like more than we would spend)

Car: Will buy 1 second hand car as Gf will be working at gyms in the city

Fuel: 400

Reg and Ins: 100

Total: 4890

Monthly salary of minimum wage - tax and Medicaid: 2468

x2: 4936

Seems perfect since we should both earn more than minimum wage and won't spend as much as estimated.

Is there anything im missing?

Also looking for advice on moving. We will not have jobs till we go out there but we have money to survive for 3-4 months. Should we try find apartment we like online and fill out forms and such now so we can move in when we land? Or go temp accommodation for a month while we have to wait for applications to be accepted etc.

We have bank statements. References from previous jobs and a stunning review from previous landlord.

Think that's everything for now.

Thanks in advance guys!

Callum

Hey. I live with my gf in a 2 bed apartment in wooloowin/clayfield. About 5ks from city.

Last electricity bill was 70 for the month and we have no gas. Rent around here you can get a decent apartment for 350 or so.

Unlimited broadband 60 with tpg!

Can't remember water bill but way less than your budget.

If you want to be in city, I would advise newstead/Tenerife/new farm area. Lots to do within a walk and on the river

Brilliant thanks! Just seems so odd to have so much for seemingly so little.

I came from London, so I find I have a lot more spare money here unless I go nuts in the pubs which are pretty expensive.

Hi, we have recently moved to Brisbane and some of your calculations are a bit out

* you will not get a decent car for under $5000. We were determined to and got one for just under but it is a bomb. Most cars are usually just under $10000 (second hand). We pay around $55 per week petrol and the rego is $670 pa just as a guide. Insurance is separate.

* food - you will need around $200 a week for groceries

* internet with a decent carrier is around $120 a month (ours includes all line rental, phone calls to all aus and uk land and mobiles). I need good internet for my business

* our mobiles are around $30 a month pay as you go

* I dont know what you are imagining a PT will earn here but it isnt much

* I have no idea what medicaid is (apologies if this is medicare and a typo)

* minimum wage is $16.37 an hour but you will find a lot of jobs here are zero hours equivalents so you wont be able to guarantee the full time (sorry).

* we have found it incredibly difficult to get jobs here and it has been 9 months, we are below minimum due to causal and abn hours. I would highly reommend trying to get jobs first.

* you will have quite a few big hits at first - paying to get aussie licences etc, so watch that 3-4 month budget

* we dont eat out as we cant afford it but I think a meal at a restaurant for 2 will be over $100 each time?

* we havent got an elctricity bill yet but will let you know how much it is when we get it. (we are in a small flat)

Familywright. Try vaya.net.au for mobiles I pay 17 a month.

120 for internet is a rip off. I get 15mbps with Tpg for 60 and Skype people back home.

By yourself an entertainment book and never pay 100 again!

I agree on the car though you need 5k.

Groceries usually no more than 100 a week for us as a couple. Really think you are overpaying for a lot

Well I'm in Surrey and spend time in London so I get that lol.

Did you go temp accommodation first or did you chose a place online before you moved over?

I have an aussie partner so moved straight in with her in rented. Now own our own place

15mbps? How do you convert that? I used 4 GB in one day when I tried a hot spot. I need unlimited so need the big one I'm afraid. I also have had bad experiences with the non major internet companies but will look at that, Do you pay line rental? We dont.

I also use internet on the phone? What does the $17 cover? I will be looking at that.

Groceries include household goods - cleaning etc. I even shop at aldi!

I'm thinking for 2 athletic people, they might be looking at high end products and possibly even supplements.

Hi,

If you rent you'll find that the water bills are covered already. You can also get pretty good payg mobile Sims for $30 a month - just bring a couple of unlocked phones with you.

Think my last electricity bill for a 2 bed unit (no a/c though, just fans) was about $200 a quarter.

You might also want to factor in contents insurance. Think mine is about $80 a month with $20k cover including extra bicycle cover.

Travel in bris is pretty cheap by public transport (I think). Shouldn't be much more than $35 a week if you live reasonably close as after your 9th journey it's free for the rest of the week by go-card.

Good luck!

Eddy

Wow thanks for the replies guys! really appreciate this. Job sites seem to think Arbs get paid alright, and my Gf has a friend from her uni course living in Adelaide as a a PT and is not too bad.

I did not know about the zero hours though so thanks, is that what "casual" means? And i also didn't realise that perhaps the job situation in Brisbane was as bad as it is. 2 friends from my course went out, 1 to Adelaide in Sept and 1 to Canberra in Dec and both got jobs within a month. Not sure if those areas are doing differently.

Also I like a scoop of protein shake after a workout but we don't use anything else we just like to eat healthy. No problem doing most of the shop at Aldi and getting a few things elsewhere.

Evan you have money to spend for three to four months but you need a proper job source meet the expense. So you must find a job there than try to move.Otherwise you may to face many financial problem which might cause of many other problems.Because you have to pay mortgage for your car and other things.

Also its kind of hard to work it out on google maps, hard far would it take to get from the east coast to the very city centre of Brisbane?

Which area do you mean by east coast? Wynnum sort of area? 30 to 40 mins at a guess. I wouldn't really advise as a young couple though

Do you eat fresh food for $100 per week? That's only $7 each per day? Seems very low. We are moving next year and I had budgeted for $1,000 per month for 2 adults and a 3 year old.

Fruit and veg is very cheap when you buy the stuff that is in season. Plus as we are both at work all week we only cook one meal a day with sandwiches for lunch. I swear we have never spent more than 130 in one week often just 80 or so it is variable. Depends what foods you eat
