We've just last week left our short term rental on Landsborough Av in Scarborough. Perhaps you're looking at the same apartment?! (Scarborough Beach Resort). It was a great place to start out. It was fairly quiet, had the basics there and felt safe. It's lovely being right on the beach.

Yes that sounds like the same place. Not sure if it is the same apartment.

how did you find getting a long term rental?

Was it hard, lots of competition.

I posted here about getting a rental about a month ago. The hardest bit was getting the ID in order. Different agencies want different things but most wanted an Aussie driving license, some wanted references, details of previous rental payments, proof of address with utility bills etc.

We got the first rental we applied for. There were only a couple of other families looking round the house when we did, so we might have been the only applicants! We moved in a week ago.

Great to see this thread as we're taking up our rental just near there tomorrow!

Nigel and any others interested - we got accepted for our first rental offer (but then we're employed and property owners already living elsewhere in Australia), but, depending on your circumstances, if you get the chance consider taking up the advice I was given by someone at a Brisbane central employment agency, which worked - once you find somewhere, if you think they will be happy with you as prospective tenants (challenge no. 1), haggle on the rent. There is so much quantity of property available in the area, that, unless it would lose you the rental, it's certainly worth considering a try.

If you don't want to live in a modern apartment, the challenge though of finding a suitable rental on the Peninsular, being an area with a lot of older homes, can be the quality of the buildings/interiors, ideally you do need to view properties in person before signing up. As others say, the location can be excellent. (We know of others going to try North Lakes first as it seems quite easy and quick to secure a rental there, but we're happier choosing a good spot where we hope to settle, from the outset).

Everyone - do you commute and if so to what area - I'd love fresh views on the commuting challenges/advice from the Peninsular in any direction, thanks in advance.

(also all specific other recommendations on cafes etc. etc. welcome).
