Hello Alice, Brisbane has some excellent facilities for water sports.

There are all sorts of watersports from scuba diving to surfing, sailing to wakeboarding and paddle boarding. You can canoe, kayak, swim, whatever you fancy having a go at.

In terms of dangerous animals in the water, it depends on the area and the time of year. The big ones are sharks, jellyfish and sea snakes. You also have scorpion fish, lion fish and stone fish (all of which you will be familiar with if you have dived in warm water). Read up on them, make yourself aware of what they look like and how to deal with it if you do get hurt. You would be very unlucky to bump into most of them, but awareness is the best way to protect yourself.

When you arrive, try and join some groups to have a go at the different sports. You will find other members more than happy to tell you about the realistic risks, what to watch for and when to avoid going in the water.

Have a lovely trip! You are moving to a lovely part of the world.
