The demand for skilled migrants in Australia is significant, with certain occupations being targeted to meet labour shortages and steady employment growth. More than 150 foreign workers arrive here every day in response to the nation's shortage of skilled workers. A key feature of the recent employment boom has been the exceptionally strong growth in full time jobs. As of 1 July 2006, new immigration forms and fees come into effect, as well as other changes to various visa categories. Australian immigration law is subject to frequent amendments that can often impact on a person's ability to meet the visa criteria and lodge a valid application. One of the most important changes introduced was the replacement of the Skilled Designated Area category with a two-stage visa process. Under the old category, applicants would obtain permanent residence without any further obligations after the visa was granted. However, following the changes introduced on 1 July 2006, applicants will obtain a provisional 3 year visa at the first stage. In order to qualify for permanent residence at the second stage, applicants now need to live and work in the state/territory where their sponsoring relative resides for at least 2 years. It is extremely important to be properly informed before you start the Australian migration process.
