1875HFC
Hi guys, coming to Sydney as a backpacker in October and been looking at accommodation in Newtown in Sydney. Could anyone tell me what this area is like. Safe? Clean? Jobs nearby? Thanks very much
northshorepom
Scruffy round the edges but gentrified now, students, trendy, great fun, close enough to CBD. Sydney's Camden, late 1990s era.
1875HFC
sounds pretty good to me mate. Getting a job is the main priority really so provided there are plenty restaurants and cafes etc not too far away, even a short commute is ideal. flag of convenience
Great place to stay with a bit of a vibe. Easy enough to walk into the centre. As a backpacker few better areas than Newtown, unless you want to be by the beach....
1875HFC
Sounds very promising. Will probably look to stay in a hostel for 10 days then move into accommodation in Newtown.
MARYROSE02
HEY! Surry Hills is better than Newtown! It is the only Australian suburb that is officially cool! "American lifestyle magazine 'Complex' named Surry Hills the 23rd most stylish neighbourhood in the world last year. It was the only Austrailan suburb named in the list, which featured the First Arrondisement of Paris, Harajuku in Tokyo, and Soho in New York in its top three positions." They are both OK. Newtown is better if you have a job at Sydney uni or RPA hospital. Surry Hills is slightly closer to the CBD, couple of stops closer to the CBD on the rail line and you can definitely walk into the City (in about 20 minutes.) Surry Hills is more central - you can walk one way to Newtown, another to Glebe, another to the City, another to Darlinghurst and Paddington. There are plenty of hostels around Central Station too on the fringe of both Surry Hills and the City. But I AM biased!
