Anywhere around the CBD or Kings Cross is OK, loads of hostels in both locations, or go for a beach if you want that kind of vibe - Bondi, Coogee. I prefer to be in the city and heading out to the beach rather than the other way around because if you want to travel out beyond the city, you still have to come in from the beach 'burbs.
