The post-mortems are starting, none involving the deceased, only the politically dead. Everybody is broke after the campaign costs, the bribes, the celebrations, the wakes. The telephones have stopped working, after a week of working sometimes. I went to consult the mayor about it, but he was in the States doing a spot of banking. Something else must have been privatised while I was not looking. The red ink has faded from the posters and the black is fading. VOTE FOR . . . Who was that? The poster gave up and fluttered to the ground. An old, arthritic, hungry, one-eyed dog dragged himself across the road to sniff the fallen paper. He found it inedible and pissed on it. We are off to see the wizards of Oz. Another trip. Another wait outside the embassy. Our TWO WONGS DON'T MAKE A WHITE T-shirts and my attempts to sleep on the sidewalk upset the gunmen. ‘You can't sleep there, sir.’ ‘Obviously. It looks bad doesn't it?’ ‘We will have to ask you to move.’ ‘What about the man who just rode his motorcycle on the sidewalk? You didn't say much to him.’ ‘Sleeping on the sidewalk is not permitted.’ ‘Nonsense, there are people sleeping on the sidewalk all over town.
