Cerberus1
We were up at Cooktown again over the weekend for the 2012 Cooktown Discovery Festival which commemorates/ re-enacts the landing of Captain Cook in 1770. Some photos from the weekend below. First 3 pictures from the re-enactment. As is always the case, every time we've been there, the weather was fantastic and the sky at dusk never fails to impress. Took another drive out to anchor point while we were there (not blowing a gale this time) Photos below of Horseshoe Lake in Lakefield National Park On the way back from Lakefield, stopped off at Split Rock where the Rock Art dates back over 15,000 years. First photo depicts Flying Foxes, second photo depicts 'tall spirits', not sure of the third.
Guest The Pom Queen
Have to agree Cooktown is lovely, I know it's a long way for most of you but if you can attend the Captain Cook Festival it's worth it.

Would have been a more challenging drive in '85, I read they didn't finish tarmacking the road to Cooktown until 2005.

Guest guest17301
Wow, when we have done the expensive trip back to UK the next place we plan to visit is FNQ so maybe we will time it to coincide....

From memory, the bitumen ended at/near Mt. Carbine. There was a 2 km section through the Palmer River area. Cheers, Bobj.
