Guest SamRadders
Hi all, Bit of advice needed please I've just received a job offer for a position at the Australia National University paying $85,000 plus 17% pension contribution. Firstly, is this a decent salary for a single 27 year old male to live on? I'm not particularly extravagant and enjoy the outdoors, rugby and generally socialising. I currently get paid approx £35,000 here in the UK and have a pretty good standard of living. Of course a potential move isn't just about the money however it does help! In terms of social life, is it a vibrant enough place for someone of my age? Plenty going on in terms of nightlife and general activities? Any advice appreciated! Cheers, Sam
Guest The Pom Queen
Welcome to the forum, I'm not sure about ACT being a vibrant place, hopefully one of the locals can advise on that. I think $85k is a great salary, most families aren't earning anywhere near that.
Guest Ptp113
Thriving night scene as you'd expect with the most relaxed liquor licencing in the country. The ANU is a massive campus and has it's own 'scene'. Sporting is huge with the countries best facilities open to the public (AIS). What external activities are you interested in? Guest SamRadders
Thanks for the replies. Well there isn't a lot I'm not interesting in doing Ptp113. I enjoy mountain biking, climbing, running, canoeing/kayaking, surfing, sailing! In fact pretty much anything adventurous! How have you guys got on living in Oz? Had a good time? If anyone else has any further insight into life in Canberra please do let me know Thanks, Sam

Cheers, Sam The $85k salary seems entirely comparable with your UK salary and it above national average earnings, just as your UK salary is. No idea about the area sorry. THe ACT has the best mountain biking facilities in Oz (Stromlo Forest Park) which hosted the world titles last year, and 10 mins from the CBD. Runners are exceptionally well catered for. There are strong white water canoe club and yak club (buying myself a yak this week) and sailing on the lake. Surfing 2 hrs away. The AIS facilities are open to the public (we swim in the same pool weekly as the olympic swimmers do). The ACT has the highest sports participation per head in the country, facilities and large number of residents from o'seas maybe (nearly everybody in Canberra comes from somewhere else). Oh and I forgot the ANU Mountaineering Club (anumc.edu.anu.au) which runs over 100 trips per year and is the ACT's most active and largest outdoor activities club
