Has anyone sat the PTE with minimal prep and scored 79+ points? I had a lovely revision timetable sorted but covid restrictions and associated childcare issues put a spanner in the works.

I’m booked to take the test on Saturday but will be working all week. I’m going to try and do some revision in the evenings, but with two small children at home I often find my brain doesn’t really function after midday 🙃🙃🙃 wondering just how bad my chances of a decent score are at this point.....

Tbh I think it depends entirely on how confident you are with the English language, ‘test’ situations and how much writing etc you tend to do on a daily basis.

As an example, my partner and I both had to complete it (native English speakers) for different reasons. He’s the main applicant, so was doing it for points, I completed it as part of an assessment for my occupation.

He works in a trade and doesn’t use computers/draft emails much. Our agent advised he studied for his, to brush up on his skills. He got an overall 79, with his writing being the lowest score of 73.

I didn’t study at all, as our agent advised that due to my occupation, the likelihood was that I’d be quite comfortable in the test anyway. I got an overall 90, with writing being my lowest at 87.

I think sometimes the pressure you apply before doing any test and reading horror stories and words of warning can do more harm. If you’re pretty confident in your abilities, I wouldn’t see the need to revise. If you’re feeling a little uneasy and feel like your skills could do with a brush up, then setting a few hours aside can’t do any harm. Even if it’s only to ease your fears.

    Good luck x

  3. Hi all,

Just wondering if somebody can help to answer my query please.
We received an ITA and applied for a 491 visa in July 20, with 80 points.

As of May 21, we will have crossed over from 7 years work experience to 8 years, which I believe is an additional 5 points.

I just wondered if this updated automatically in the system or if it’s something we’d need to do manually? Or does it not matter now that the application is lodged?

    TIA

  4. Hi all

Those of you who have an agent and front loaded Medicals and Police checks, what has been your agents thoughts on the expiry of these?

Im conscious that they normally expire 12 months from issue, but DOHA are the ones who requested them within 28 days of lodgement. Seems really unfair to have to pay to do them all again, when they requested we supply them in the first place!

Our agent doesn’t know which way they’ll proceed. Just curious on other agents opinions?

Background info - we applied for a 491 in July 20, status hasn’t changed from ‘received’

    Hi Everyone,

I will be applying for the 491 visa whenever possible and there’s a few grey areas about the visa which I’m unsure about. My agent seems to think this should all be ok but I would like to hear from people who are actually on the visa... Obviously if a state sponsors me (Queensland for talking sake) and I get to Queensland and find that’s there’s no ideal work opportunities there for me but there is in NSW, can I live and work in a regional part of NSW and still be eligible for the PR visa after 3 years?  Also, do you have to go and work in your skilled occupation or can you go and work in any sector and be eligible for the PR visa after 3 years?

    Thanks

We were advised that you’re morally obligated to stay in the state that sponsors you for the duration of your stay.

When you come to apply for PR (after working for 3 years and earning above 55k per annum) it won’t reflect well on gaining state sponsorship from one state and moving to another, unless you have a letter of release from the state that sponsored you.

Once you gain PR, you can move wherever you wish

To be honest, I’m not sure if this is true or a rumour. We never asked our agent as we don’t intend on moving from the sponsoring state (if we get the visa!)

You have 12 months from the date of medical or police check, which ever is the earlier to make first entry. That though can just be a holiday. You then have five years from date of gent. But, you visa should show these details.

12 months from police or medical check? Our agent has advised from the date of visa grant.

    Hi all,

From the date of being awarded a 491 Visa, how long does one have before they have to arrive on Australia? What kind of a window is provided to move before the Visa is cancelled.

    Thanks

Our agent has advised it’s 12 months from the date of the visa being granted (making initial entry, whether it be a holiday or move)

With it being a 5 year visa with 3 years work requirement, if you intend to apply for PR, you wouldn’t want to be leaving it much longer than 12 months IMO

    Hi all,

Pleased to advise and give hope to those that are waiting on grants.  I was granted 491 visa on 5 Feb!!  I am offshore, though do not have an exemption to travel as non-critical occupation.  I will update my timeline.  Thought this may help others who are still waiting.  Just hang on in there like we did, and when least expected (especially with all the comments in forum about 491 visas, offshore applciants and non-critical occupations), you will wake you to the email you have been waiting for!

    Congratulations! I bet that’s a relief!

To be honest I’m really shocked that you’re offshore and non critical occupation. I assumed everything was on hold until borders opened back up!

Best of luck with your move. At least you have something to celebrate in this horrible lockdown 🍾

    @Conyo2588 @martnLFC

Weird thing happened on Monday, I contacted my agent for an update (she has all the log in details so I couldn't check the status) and she came back saying that we hadn't even got a case manager yet and shouldn't expect anything for a couple of months at least.

She rang me yesterday lunchtime to say that they had, just then, emailed with the visa grant.

0-60 in less than 24 hours it seems.

Have either of you had any progress?

We are now need to assess our timescales and maybe look at the exemption application for next year if no avenues into the country open up.

Congratulations! I’m assuming you have an occupation on their critical skills list?

Keep us updated on your journey progress!

    Exciting times for you 🍾

If you don't mind me asking, what occupation are you entering under, and which state is sponsoring you?

Unfortunately, although I've visited Australia a fair few times and done the obligatory backpacker year a while ago, I skipped Adelaide.

The plan was to have a trip over in November to get a feel for the place. Obviously that won't happen and it looks increasingly like the first visit to the area will be for the move.

Personally I'd see Coober Pedy as more desirable; compared to being stuck in limbo for the next 12 months.

We’ve applied under my partners occupation. Wall and floor tiler. I’m an Accountant, the points were too high to apply under my occupation unfortunately.
We’re also on SA sponsorship. We’ve been to Perth, Melbourne, and a few places up the east coast ie Brisbane, but not Adelaide. If we do get granted a visa, it’s looking like the actual move would also be the first time we go to Adelaide and surrounding areas.

Are you looking to enter on a subclass 491 visa.

My partner and I submitted our EOI to SA the Friday before the financial year cut off (so that we didn't get scuppered by them no reopening the programme for obvious reasons) and were invited to apply on the following Tuesday.  Submitted the application and paid the fees on July 28th.  They have changed the process and requested medicals and police checks within 28 days.

These were submitted on August 24th.

Only just joined the forums and don't know anyone in this position, so don't know what to expect - other than the worst seeing as it is 2020.

You’re in much the same position as myself and @AmyL

Similar time frame, our medicals were submitted in August. It’s just a waiting game. Tbh there’s no point them processing 491’s as they can’t gain entry to the country. The 5 years also starts ticking from the date of grant so that’s probably for the best!

I just feel really sorry for the people who’ve had them granted and can’t gain entry. It must be so frustrating and upsetting just seeing the time ticking down and it being out of your hands. I really do think the Australian government haven’t thought it through very well.

I had my travel exemption granted (Wednesday this week) to leave early September, however my visa still showing as received. Submitted April27th so past with the 3 months processing time for a 491 State regional. Has anyone else been or in this situation? And if so how long did it take for visa to be granted once exemption was approved. Thanks

Unless things have changed recently, I was under the impression that they weren’t allowing 491’s into the country. Has this now changed?

😂😂 it's very undignifying standing there starkers trying to touch your toes

So you get seen together but the doc only does one person at a time so your partner will be seated near the door and then you will be seen to so he won't be anywhere near you or the scales

    Haha thank god for that!

And yes, I can imagine your dignity does take a little dive then 😂

    Thanks for all the info

Be sure to keep me updated on your visa progress! We’re on roughly the same timescales so it’ll be good to see how somebody else is getting on x

Just letting you know how medicals were

I was so stressed going in I've got such a fear of doctors but It really was not as bad as i thought. Whole process was about 45 minutes. We went to the manchester one.

We arrived and were given sample pots for urine sample and signed a paper to consent to being examined (we got wrong for not bringing our own pen so bring one!). You go to the loo when you are ready and then got called in and we were seen together at the same time. Went through medical history (any diagnosis, under any specialists, any medication etc.) Had blood pressure taken, did quick eye test just reading some letters, then stripped down to underwear and listened to chest and lungs, checked ears, checked body over for lumps and bumps, checked reflexes then had to stand up and touch your toes (🤔) ... then bloods. Got dressed went back in waiting room and was called in for chest xray which took all of 10 seconds.

Was really just like a good old fashioned routine doctors check up.

Thank you so much for updating me, I really appreciate it!

I feel much better now that I know what to expect

Not sure how my partners going to feel trying to touch his toes 😂

Do you get weighed together? I really don’t want him seeing my weight 😳
