  1. My five cents on manual farm work.

    - Its hard. Dont rush from the start, youll burn out. Pace yourself.

    - On the first three days, everyone else is faster than you. Accept it. Pace yourself. You will catch up after a week or so. Some people you will never catch, accept it.

    - You will get exceeding tired. Go to bed early, especially in the first week. You may look like a party pooper, but you can start staying up with the party crowd after you get in the swing. Pace yourself.

    - You will get easily dehydrated and burnt. Drink lots, sunscreen lots. Buy a floppy hat, wear loose, light clothing, keep away from crop tops.

    - There will be days you dont feel hungry, especially in the first week, all you will want to do is collapse and go to bed. Eat, your body is working hard, it needs fuel.

    - Everything is heavy. Protect your body with clothing over the places things rub.

    - Dont refuse to listen or follow instructions. This is a farmers livelihood, they are the ones that sink or swim, pretty much everything depends on getting the harvest in quickly and without damage.

    But, the positives:

    - You will get better at it, it takes time. The farmer, and some of the pickers, have been doing this for years, some have been doing it for decades. They dont expect you to be an expert on the first day, even though they would like you to be......

    - You will get amazing fit, fitter than you have probably ever been.

    - Physical work is strangly enjoyable after a while, but still always tiring. Pace yourself.

    - Youll meet lots of lovely people.

    - Youll get the opportunity to extend your visa.

ETA - youll be fine if you pace yourself

    Good luck

wise words Dan ... it was kind of you to do that for Stacey ...

  2. I'm really struggling tonight. I've got all anxious and emotional over something silly and I'm having one of those "I could just go home moments". I think the thought of the fruit picking is making me extra anxious because everyone here keep telling me bad stuff about it

I wish I could give you a Aussie granny hug ... it is natural you are anxious about the fruit picking job when you have thoughtless idiots who are telling you bad stuff ... just go there give it a try ... if you don't like it leave and go back to what you had planned before ... at least you tried ... x

  3. Well time sure flies when your having fun they say, last week it was mission accomplished for me and the wife, we got our citizenships and I must admit I even enjoyed the ceremony.

So those of you that know me know that I only do a yearly update , however I think this will be my last update, I will still lurk and read posts but not so much to post about.

I just want to reassure those people who are insecure, worried, homesick, fed up, bored etc etc just keep going things will work out for you in the long run.

Many times I've battled the pull back to the UK , however common sense has prevailed and I'm still here living in WA.

I'm not going to brag but wanted to share our accomplishments with you to show it can be done.

We arrived in November 2011 with approx $20,000 to our name, 4 suitcases and 10 small tea chest boxes which turned up 8 weeks late lol.

In the time here we have found work, then when I lost my job I started my own business which touch wood is doing well.

Built our own house with a pool, nice new car, boat, plus a few toys. We have managed this by embracing what Australia had to offer us and worked hard.

No it might not be all that it's cracked up to be here in WA but it's a hell of a lot better than what the UK could offer me.

So if your feeling down go and do something completely Australian that you couldn't do back in the UK, crank up the stereo with a good Aussie song crack open a beer and take a look around you, worked for me in my darkest hours.

Good luck to everyone out there and as Bob Marleys song 3 little birds said, "don't worry bout a thing............."

    Much love Chris x
