To cut a long story short, we paid a breeder in Europe a significant amount of money for a miniature dachshund. They even told us we had to pay for the flights up front which we did. Anyway, we have lost a 5 figure sum and are sick to the stomach.

So now we are considering trying again but this time from the UK. We will then send the pup over with @BobPetairUK .

Is there anyone who would be interested in fostering a mini Dachshund for a few months from when it leaves the breeder until when it is ready to fly.

Also if anyone is in that position over in Australia and they need to fly before the dog is ready we are more than happy to help out.

    Please pm me

My friends dachsund in the UK has just had pups but I dont know if they are all sold -she would keep the pup until it was shipped as she loves her babies Not sure though if all are sold but i can ask

  2. My son was stopped from boarding in Adelaide for a 2 week holiday to Thailand and he had 5 months on his passport

Travelling into UK on an Aussie passport you need to be on a return ticket or immigration will query

I think I would renew the UK passport for entry but your daughter would have to leave the UK on her Aussie passport as she wont have a return visa now in her UK one

  3. Quarantine is now only 10 days used to be 3 or 6 months but its pricey Our Shar Pei travelled   well but I would not like to do it too often as he has lost weight and was a bit daggy when we got him home

Thank you Bob, I thought that was still the case for coming in which seems silly, why can't they just do the pet passport

Thanks Pom Queen. SO no further status updates via their online system? I had thought they would use it to give more regular updates.

Sigh...  just impatient now to see him again.  Thanks for replying!

We had one email as I had contacted them prior to shipping our boy who will only  pee on grass he does not do concrete -they said he was fine and able to acssess grass

Only other communication was his release note

  5. Just wanted to say we have today transferred our funds from the UK to Oz through Moneycorp without a hitch -yeeha !

Our Moneycorp manager Mohammed Alum has been very supportive over the last 12 months as I have pontificated over transferring when the £ was so low

But the transfer has gone smoothly thank goodness as several years ago I transferred from my Aussie bank to my UK bank who after two hours decided to send the funds back to Oz !!!

The funds were 'lost ' for 5 weeks floating in the ether one would guess - the UK bank did give me the funds back before the transaction was 'found ' at my insistence but !

I feel with Moneycorp having a 'real person ' to deal with is an asset so well done

FYI, put boxes that will be of interest to customs at the front of the cube. So if they want to check it they can just crack it open and find those boxes right there. Else they'll have to haul everything out and perhaps start checking more.

We boxed up shoes and Xmas decorations and labelled the boxes clearly and put those in last. Both were checked and had yellow customs tape on them reflecting that.

If you are shipping Xmas decs, make sure even the fake flowers and pine cones are ditched before shipping. Yes they really have been known to destroy that sort of thing at the expense of the person shipping. We just had baubles, tinsel and a few other bits of sentimental value. All the lovely cinnamon sticks and bows, pine cones and fake cones etc got given away before we left. TBH I've replaced this end just fine and in fact have way more now than I ever did before.

Yep ditch the Xmas decs we had a wand taken off Santa and ended up leaving Santa at the depot as it would have cost $45.00 to fumigate him lol

    Hi Guys

I am here in Brisbane. My pet dog will join me soon. He is almost 5 years old. I am extremely worried as he suffers from alzheimers. He gets moody, sometimes very quiet and sometimes aggressive, he has bitten me twice and the other members of the family, so I am worried what if he bites the dog trainers ? Will they put him down ?  I believe he has to stay there 10 days.

Does Pet air fly from U.A.E ?

Can I give him his treats and tin food seperately ? Since the quarantine is in Melbourne do i need to fly down there to get him or will they fly him to Brisbane ?

Your response will help me. Kindly be frank I am open to anything.

    Thanks

If your dog needs special food you need to fill a form in for quarantine -think they are online -which your vet has to sign Otherwise he gets fed kibble provided by quarantine We flew our boy from Melbourne to Adelaide with Jetpets they were very good picked him up from quarantine etc Have you done all of the neccesary prep for shipping your dog and booked quarantine etc ?

Another thing is parts availability, I don't think Vauxhall sold them here but there is a Chevy Captiva though. It might be the same as the Vauxhall Antara though.

Depreciation will be brutal and insurance could be interesting as well.

Parts were no problem with ours but insurance phew !

    I know most of you advise against this but I want to test the water anyway.  We have a relatively new Captiva that we'd probably consider taking over.  If anyone has done this then I'd appreciate some advice on the following;

    1. cost to ship and shipping time
    2. insurance implications back in England

I know I'll need to get the dash change over to MPH and get the MOT done.

    Thanks

We took our Captiva over end of 2013 cost around £1209 for modification etc  it needs  an IVA test - an Individual vehicle test We had a firm pick the car up from the docks modify it and get it on the road then brought up north to our home

It will cost an arm and a leg to insure though as its an import and depends if you personally can get some no claims i think it was £1200 the first year I will look for shipping costs although we did a 40ft container with car and furniture

I will look documents up i think i still have scans etc

    Hi,

I got numerous quotes from Pet Removal companies and found their quotes to be nothing short of exploitation. I understand that you would want your precious fur babies to be in the best hands possible but the mark up from the pet removal companies averages around £1,200.

I spoke with one removal company and asked them about what their actual process is and what they do and they mentioned that they use Emirates Skycargo. So I contacted Emirates Skycargo directly (who are great btw) and they quoted me roughly £500 for the flight based on weight (from Manchester to Melbourne) and this will be no different to the flight your pet would be on if using a pet transport company and a further £100 for export fees at the airport and another £100 roughly for handling fees at Dubai airport.

I asked Emirates Skycargo why people use pet transport companies instead of doing it themselves and it comes down to the fact that you would have to take your pet to the airport 5 hours before take off to fill out the exportation docs and go through the necessary checks and apparently that is not convenient for people so they pay a £1.2k premium to not do that. He also mentioned that sometimes the crate needs to be sealed by a vet when going to certain countries so that is where the pet transport companies can be handy.

Breakdown of fees for my 1 year old Cockerpoo

So her flight, export fee, handling fee at Dubai Airport and crate together will be roughly £800

Her Pet Passport and Rabies Blood Tests - £215 so far

    £1000 for the quarantine fees

    £280 for the import fee

$424 to transport her from Mickleham to Newcastle Airport

I estimate further vets fees to be roughly £200 for the next round of blood tests and final tick and flea treatments that need to be signed off by a vet.

TBH if you cant be arsed sorting everything out yourself use a pet transport company but check what they actually charge for because you may have a shock when you realise that they usually only cover the flight, crate and travel to and from the airports and a bit of hand holding.

I would do a lot of research before committing to a Pet Transport company and try to get the Rabies tests and Import cert sorted before anything else as it will help massively when it comes to booking the quarantine and subsequently the flights as Melbourne Airport wont confirm acceptance of your pet on the incoming flight unless they have confirmation that it is booked in at Mickleham in a confirmed and paid for booking.

Also, don't be pressured to get a wooden crate made. There are a lot of IATA approved crates out there and the only reason the pet transport companies make you use the ones they make is to increase their margin.

Hope this helps. There are a lot of companies that are making a huge profit from people in our situation who are emigrating and I think its always best to try to cut out the middle man if possible.

    Lucy :)

The company i used make their own wooden crates which I was more than happy about My Shar Pei has quite long claws and i felt a wooden floor would be better for him - plus because he is a Brachylyptic breed they made the crate a bit bigger for him Some airlines will only fly Brachylyptic dogs in their winter months I never felt pressured at all about the crate as it came with the price quoted Plus i felt the company I used genuinely cared for the pets they transport

I have shipped my dogs both ways and when it comes to getting animals into Australia animal transport companies do a damn site more than hand holding IMO. The paperwork for each dog was 23 pages long, one minor error and they could be made to spend 6 months in quarantine which will cost you far more. You could not use any vet either as AQIS required extra certification,  use the wrong vet and they will reject the paperwork. This was a few years ago and the regs may have changed by now but that's  another reason for using an animal transport company as they should be up to date.

I agree Scottie I am no sloth when it comes to paperwork but the paperwork for Oz plus requirements are quite formidable I printed everything off for my vet and thought i had every aspect covered as they were a UK government vet as required

Luckily I shipped with a pet shipper who took our boy to their kennels prior to him being flown out We left a few days before him as we needed to back in Oz on a certain date

We were in Singapore when my vet rang me to say they had just realised they had not got the last lot of blood results back - i had taken him a few days before he went away and the results were supposed to be emailed to me and the company shipping him

The company shipping him were brilliant -rang i think it is  Weybridge -the lab that does the tests to be told his samples had not been sent there ! They rushed him to their vets couriered his bloods to the lab and got him out as scheduled =phew !

Had i been the one doing it i would not have known where to start with the emergency tests etc consequences could have been we would probably have had to cancel our flights and reschedule too as things went so pear shaped

  12. If your retired prescriptions are free , a bus pass means free travel at certain times and to be honest we used the car far less in the UK as public transport was so easy

Rates are much more expensive as is petrol but because we did not use the car as much we were not using as much

Swings and roundabouts in lots of ways

They are registered, and they were mortified to be told they'd cocked up.

It was a simple keyboard slip, adding an extra digit to his number by mistake.

That happened to my friends dog and she had to spend 4 more weeks in kennels in Oz not a happy customer at the time

  14. We shipped our Shar Pei in 2016

It cost us £2105 GBP for his flight ,picking him up from up North and kennels for a few days

£175 GBP for rabies blood test

£163 GBP for blood tests ( that was the test the vets lost lol )

Around £400 GBP for vaccinations Rabies etc. worming and defleaing (not that he had any)

    Quarantine was $1461 AUD

    Import permit was $485 AUD

flying him to Adelaide from quarantine $260 AUD

All in all not a cheap exercise but !

I spoke to Chris today and I am definitely going to use them.    He gave me good advice, so hopefully my two girls can come over earlier than having to wait 6 months.

Good luck with your dogs' flight tomorrow.    Mine have already done the flight before and they were fine.   x

I am so pleased to hear that when next you speak to Chris tell him its Ralphy the Shar Pei I am taking about and we are forever gratfull

OMG!  That is terrible.  However careful we are, as owners, to be organised etc. it seems it is the vets that make silly mistakes.

Our vet will now be paying over £4k for our dog to stay at carers for 6 months - just because of getting a digit wrong.

Apparently, our vet spoke to Airpets who we are using.   I emailed Airpets too but the girl who is dealing with sending the dogs over is so lacklustre in replying, it is ridiculous.   I have sent her two emails recently and hasn't responded to either.   I may request a different handler anyway.

I wanted to use Golden Arrow but it was too far for the carers to drive to take the dogs.  I know they could meet them at Heathrow but Airpets collect from home and I used them before.

Melanie Golden Arrow picked our boy up from home we lived in the North East ,Sunderland , cost extra but well worth it -he stayed with them for a week prior to shipping and I truly can not fault them we would have been in a right mess with the lost blood test but they took Ralphy to their vets and couriered the bloods to the place that tests them

  17. Oh thats so bad -our  vet lost the last blood test before our boy was due to fly and told us when we were in Singapore en route ( we had left Ralphy with Golden Arrow who were shipping him )

Luckily Golden Arrow pulled out all stops to get tests done and through but the stress ruined our stay over in Singapore

I was so careful too about step by step procedures with our vet it was devastating - have you spoken to the people who will ship your two maybe they can advise as well

  18. It was a very long time ago but my daughter in law could not bring her saddles so try to make as many enquries as possible

I know quarantine can disinfect items so to speak but i also know they charge like a wounded bull -our car was $ 800 and they wanted $50 for a 6 inch santa clause because of his wand -poor Santa got left behind

    Hi all,

we are planning to move next year, so am starting the process of arranging everything for our dog to come with us.

he is a healthy 9 month old French bulldog who I love to bits.

i couldn't imagine life without him so leaving him is not an option.

i wanted to hear of any positive stories from people who have flown there frenchie/pug to oz.

i am aware there is a risk as he is a snub nose dog, I was wondering if he had his soft pallet operation and nostril widening would put him at a lesser risk?

i am willing to do all I can to make sure his journey is as safe and comfortable as possible.

i have had a quote from Petair and am happy with using them as they have great experience in flying animals.

im just worried in case anything happened to him I would never forgive myself and feel am I being selfish by taking him as I'm not sure he would like the heat which is another reason I wanted to get his pallet done before we leave

any advice/reassurances would be much appreciated :)

We flew our Shar Pei also a brachleptic breed and he was fine only thing is Emirates would only fly him on thier winter months as they say it's too hot on the ground in Dubai in thier summer months

He has settled well and it's like he has always been here

  20. We flew our Shar Pei to Oz had to go through quarantine ect and he was fine it was me that was frazzled !

With finnaces you would only get a Centrelink pension if you were resident in Oz but part of your time here in Oz does count towards a UK pension pre 2001 You can also pay uk contributions up to date it's quite costly but would give you full UK pension if you do retire in the UK

I have been in Australia for almost 30 years, moving here with my young children who are now both adults and I have 3 young grandsons, 8, 6 and 5.

i came here with their father, we divorced and I later remarried an Australian, which unfortunately had also recently ended.

My family, ageing mother, brothers, sisters,  and fairly large extended family are all in the UK. Even though I have been here for 30 years, we are still very close and have regular visits back and forth.

As I've got older I feel a strong need to return to my family in the U.K., but also torn by the prospect of leaving my children and grandchildren who are very entrenched in the Aussie way of life!

I am feeling more and more socially isolated, whilst I have good friends here, I have no-one that I am really close to.

I haven't even discussed with my kids the possibility of me leaving Australia for good, and there are also financial issues to deal with, such as pensions, would I get a job in the U.K. at the ripe old age of 60!!

any advice or suggestions would be welcome

We went back in 2001 to look after my Mum we had been here 20 years at the time Came back to Oz in 2006 but felt unsettled somehow so in 2013 we up an offed again thinking retirement and happy days We have great long term friends in the UK but no family to speak of We had though underestimated the pull of our kids and grandchildren in Oz and when out UK friends were doing things with their family's it was like a physical ache So in 2016 we upped and returned to Oz Finances can be a mine field as your not old enough to claim UK or Centrelink pensions ( think I have that right ) Good luck with what you choose to do by please do put lots and lots of thought into it
