  1. Thanks so much! I feel so much better for reading your comments! So does my auzzie hubby lol he was starting to worry!
  2. Hi Everyone, does anyone live in the Taylors Lakes area? Or nearby? I'm wanting to know how people find the schools/ daycare for children? And what they think of the area or if they recommend nearby areas?
  3. We are debating on 2 things, asking if he could get 6 months off work or asking if they would let him work from Australia for 6 months. His manager is so nice and really supportive, so it's worth an ask to be honest, nothing ventured nothing gained! I'm more worried about my little boy who is 3 when we move, he's such a sensitive little soul so I'm hoping he will be okay at a new nursery, I'm going to take enough time off to make sure he is, my other little one will be 8 months when we move (due in 2 weeks) so he won't know any different. My little one who is 3 also hates the sun!! Hahaha he's like a little baby bat!
  4. Thanks! I'm just so scared with 2 little ones and my hubby has such a good job in the UK but if we don't try we won't know so it's all card in haha.
  5. Thanks so much this info is really helpful. I think we are tempted to give Melbourne a go and see how we get on for a year, and if we don't like it perhaps try somewhere else or come back to the UK. But whilst the kids are young, we have to try it.
  6. Thanks for the info, so you find the weather similar to London? This is what worries me about Melbourne, it feels like I will be moving back to London, over crowding, weather, house prices, commute times its all what I'm afraid of when moving to Melbourne. Thanks
  7. Were moving to the best place for our children, family doesn't come into it. My parents are from the UK, which will be a 24 hour flight for them so it's alot more difficult for them too. My husbands parents will be a 1.30hr flight, I'm sure they will be fine with that. They have stated they just want us in Australia and out of the UK.
  8. Thanks this is really helpful. I think it's looking like Melbourne from the guidance people have given us, I just worry about commuting but I guess we will figure that out when we arrive. Good news re the weather lol UK weather is getting worse! My poor hubby can't cope anymore haha. Hopefully getting a job will be easier in Melbourne too. Thank you
  9. I never said in any of my posts that I would stop them from seeing their grandchildren, I'm not a monster. They are Italian, if anyone has Italian parents/In laws they will understand. They want to live with you, see you everyday ect, they are also very strict Catholics and myself and my husband are not and they are very strong with their views, which I don't want pushing onto our children, as we are a very modern family with modern views. We would also be expected to go to church on weekends if we lived near them, it would be difficult for us, and we would be unhappy. My parents are very laid back, and I'm used to that environment, no blackmail or guilt tripping ect unfortunately my hubby's family are not laid back. They make living in the UK difficult for us, so living on their door step would be way too much which is why we have lived in the UK for 10 years.
  10. Hi Kevsan, Thank you for your response, it's been really helpful to my partner and I, lots of info to the questions we had. Did your wife find part time work quite quickly? I'm really hoping for 4 days a week (I love working, but I also want to see my boys 1 extra day a week for my quality time with them) I've struggled when looking online to find any part time Project Manager work or companies with flexible working ect (my husband works compressed hours and has 1 day off every 10 days)we know we are both very fortune to have this in the UK, we chose the well on the company front, not sure we have the ability to be that picky in Melbourne as it feel it's more like London than Leeds. My husband works from home full time and loves the flexibility it gives us a family as he drops our little boy at nursery, then I collect him at 4.30pm which is great. We have been so lucky in the UK to have this which makes the move for us more difficult. It's positive to know you have worked from home with jobs, is this common in melbourne/ Adelaide? The weather is an interesting one, last time I was in Melbourne, one day it was 40 degs, then freezing and raining the next! I know it's the 4 seasons in a day. I'm worried I will find it too cold from what people have said, but I don't think my little ones would cope with the heat so Melbourne/ Adelaide would be better for them. The UK weather has been so miserable lately! It's May and the highest we have had in the last few weeks is 11 degrees, lots of cloud too. My poor Australian husband has suffered long enough in the UK as he has been here 10 years, he misses good weather so much, but also loves he flexibility of his job like me. How did you find working in Adelaide? How do you find Adelaide in general? Thanks for the info on the swimming pool, my husband friend also offered the same advice, he said he has solar panels on his which heats it up so he can use it much more so we will absolutely invest in those. Which areas have you lived in Kevsan within Melbourne? With my husband being over in the UK for 10 years, he's very much out of the loop, and what used to be bad areas are now expensive areas we can no longer afford! Thanks again so much for your response, it's been so helpful for us.
  11. Busy bee thank you for your message it's really helpful. We are really struggling to choose an area that is right for our family, it's such a big decision, but like I keep saying to my husband, if it doesn't work out where ever we choose to live after 6 months of trying, we can always move, yes it will be difficult, but live and learn ect. We like the thought of a laid back Adelaide, it's far enough flight/drive from the in laws in Melbourne, house prices seem more reasonable, alot less commuting which makes me happy as a mum to 2 little boys. But job wise, I'm not sure. I did some research and unemployment was as high as melbourne in some recent results published this year, it seems to be on the up. I'm not that interested in city living after living in London so long, we felt glad to leave the behind. I've been to melbourne and I struggled to fall in love with it last time which worries me. But we had to spend the whole time with the in laws and I didn't get any time to let my hair down, relax and venture out, so I don't want to rule it out on that basis. That's the thing you hit the nail on the head, without work you can't survive. I think it's the commuting time, house prices, and in laws that all worry me about Melbourne! Thanks for your positive message it gives us alot to think about.
  12. I know Parley, I just have concerns about moving to Melbourne (Sydney is absolutely out with 2 young children even though I love it) and not having quality time with my children because I'm working such long hours like in London, with them being so small both under 3 years. I also have in laws in Melbourne that can be a little difficult to put it politely lol which would also take time away from us with our children as they can be very demanding! My sister in law who lives in Melbourne is afraid to spend the Easter break away from her parents.....enough said haha.
  13. Thanks for the tips will keep it in mind when we start looking. We live just outside of Leeds....everything closes here lol I'd rather be in a quiet area then trying to run the rat race again, it's about quality time as a family for us. With us not having family we won't be out much anyway eating out ect it will be all about our children and spending quality time as a family enjoying nice weather to be able to enjoy the outdoors with the boys.
  14. We like quiet, so I think it would suit us more. Hubby has lived in the UK 10 years and seriously hates the weather, we also want private schooling for our 2 boys, private schooling is around 300k per child in his lifetime in the UK near us. My hubbys parents are also old and he needs to be nearer to them whilst mine are 15 years younger than his (they had children late). They have also offered to give us some cash to buy a house or pay for the boys private education, which will be nice not to have the stress of a mortgage or school fees knowing they are getting a good education. So a few factors really. The only thing keeping us in Leeds is our jobs, that's it.my family are young enough to visit us and can do so for 4 weeks at a time which is good, my hubby's family cannot/ will not fly.
  15. Hi everyone, Me and my hubby (2 children also 3 and 6 months) are considering moving to Adelaide, my hubby is a business analyst and I am a project manager, there seems to be lots of job availability on seek.com.au but is this the reality? We have a budget of around $800k for a house, that would be top range. Were looking for an area with good schools/ nurseries. Low crime rate ect and good commute (under 45 mins by either train or car) does anyone recommend anywhere? My hubby is Australian from Melbourne, and I am UK (leeds area) has anyone settled here from the UK and found it easy to make friends and settle in? Thank you x
  16. Me and my hubby met in London 7 years ago, we left the rat race and moved to leeds for a quieter family life, our work life balance is amazing, which is the only reason we have struggled to take so long to want to leave the UK. I work 4 days a week 8 -4 and can work from home anytime. My hubby works from home full time and travels to leeds or halifax every now and again, which has helped him to have a strong bond with our 2 year old as he worked from home so was hands on with no commute time which was and still is amazing. Your post is my biggest fear! Rubbish weather but paying 50% more for a house. Long commutes and long working hours (we both work in IT). We have family in Melbourne but they will be more of a burden than a help as they are very old which will also take time away from being with our children which concerns me. We thought about Brisbane but with the floods I'm not too sure. Or Adelaide in the hope that it's more laid back and better work life balance??
  17. Hi Snifter, I just read one of your blogs about living in Adelaide, it was posted in 2015, has Adelaide changed much since then? Are you still enjoying it and have job prospects increased?
  18. Hi everyone, When you bought a house in Brisbane, did you need a 10% deposit or 20% or more? Also, we are a young family with 2 young children looking for any ideas on nice safe areas with good schools if anyone has any suggestions that would be fab! We're going to rent first to get a good feel but advice would be good so we can rent first. We will both work in central brisbane, so we want to be a max 45 min commute with good train links ect or a nice car drive in without too much traffic? Thank you
  19. Thanks so much for responding! We are struggling between Melbourne and Queensland. (My husband threw Brisbane into the mix last night). It's difficult making the decision when you have young children as you don't want to keep uprooting them (especially when school/nursery places are so hard to find!) I'm really struggling with the melbourne weather, we would want and would use a pool most weekends with the kids, so that's what puts me off Melbourne and perhaps we need a better climate. Thanks again and good luck with your move.
  20. Hi everyone, my hubby, me and my 2 little boys 3 years and 9 months are looking at options to move to queensland. Our original choice was Melbourne as my hubby has family there (parents and a sister) but his parents are very old and won't be able to help us as a young family, which led us to look at alternative areas if we are going alone regardless of where we live. Also the Melbourne weather put us off a little as we would like a more sunny climate and laid back lifestyle which we worry melbourne isn't? (No hubby has been in the UK for 10 years and I am from the UK so we are slightly clueless). We love Buderim, but it's so far out from Brisbane which is probably where our jobs would be. I'm a project manager and my husband is a business analyst. We looked online at jobs in the Goldcoast for PMs but only 1 came up. Is there any lovely areas with a good/ easy commute to Brisbane that are affordable homes/ spacious/good schools and good commute (under 1 hour)? Are you a young family that can tell us the pros and cons to Brisbane? I'm worried about childcare costs for 2 young children. Is the flooding bad, as I have concerns re flooding? Has anyone got 4 day a week working? I currently have this in the UK and would love this in Queensland. Thank you in advance!!
  21. Hi everyone, myself, my hubby and our 2 little boys under 3 are moving to melbourne (not officially 100% signed off yet regarding the place). We picked melbourne as we do have family there, as it's where my husband is from. He's raised concerns about living there from speaking with friends about life style. Were wanting a family environment, we used to live in London and we left the busy life behind of the London streets 3 years ago now and we love our relaxed family life. For the people who live or have lived in Melbourne, do you find it family orientated? Do you find it safe? Do you have a good work life balance? Leave work at a reasonable hour ect if you work in an office? Enjoy the weather? I am from the UK so anything is an upgrade haha! Crime rates? Do you own a swimming pool is it worth it with the weather? Do you enjoy doing things as a family around melbourne? Lots of parks and things to do with the kids?
  22. We would love to move to Perth or Queensland for the weather, but it's jobs we found hard to find! My husband is a business analyst and I'm a project manager and there wasn't many jobs compared to melbourne. So nice though!
  23. Melbourne. Not 100% on areas yet, we're going to rent near taylors lakes in Victoria to start with I think.
  24. Thanks everyone for the responses it really helps. Car is a 2015 landrover (I'm tempted to sell but unsure). We are going with movecube and will buy a large container we are hoping to fit a large corner sofa, 2 beds (1 king 1 toddler bed), 3 mirrors all large, 5 ceiling lights and probably 3 boxes of toys and special books as well as 4 kitchen boxes, and 1 large living room box, a dining table and 6 chairs as well as 3 bar stools.... I'm wondering if it's really unrealistic as I write this to fit all that in the large move cube boxes haha!! Thanks for the links on the car seats I have 2 to buy! So that's helpful. Kirsty I've had my visa since 2013 and I've been putting off the move!! Haha had 2 babies now and needed the help from my family as my husbands family in Australia are a little on the old side. I'm dreading the cost of childcare fees for a 3 year old and 1 year old!! Thank you so much for your help
  25. Hi everyone, I'm moving to australia next year with my Auzzy hubby who has been in the UK for 10 years. We will have 2 boys under 3 years also. I'm wanting to know what's worth shipping, what is really expensive over in Australia (my hubby is very clueless after 10 years!). I've been told bed linen and towels are expensive? Are some electrical goods very expensive? Anything you wish you had of shipped and now regret not shipping? My toddler is adamant his thomas tank engine bed is going to be shipped so I'm taking the bed! Lol Are cars worth taking? I looked online and it seems coscatto car seats aren't available for children in Australia and also they probably would be illegal? They are iso fix is this true? I looked online and nearly died when I saw the price to replace 2 childrens car seats!! Has anyone shipped any reclaimed wood furniture? I have 2 reclaimed wooden dining tables I'd like to bring. Any issues on retro items? I have a beaver double sweet machine that I love and will not leave! Thanks everyone in advance.
