  1. yeah it is all rather stressful, i dont know what your skills/trades/experience is and if you have anything to come over to, but weve found it a bit difficult. not to put you off atall i wouldnt talk anyone out of it or dishearten them, but I wouldnt expect anyone to walk into a job over here at the moment, there is alot of people looking and not a lot of jobs, i have been extremely lucky getting the position i got! and even at that it is a step down from my last job, with a bit less money, but we knew that anyway. you need to start small and work your way up over here. i think the trick is just getting into work, even if its something you might not be happy with, it keeps the savings in the bank!
  2. hello guys, just a quick update, yeah, weve made the move!! as soon as visas were granted it was all steam ahead and we flew out of glasgow on the 24th may!! thats us been here about 6 weeks, and what a hectic six weeks it has been!! stayed with family for the first 4 weeks and are now living in a flat in the city, a flat we had our eye on months ago, its amazing!! have also got ourselves a wee car and started working which has been great. Loving it so far and definitely worth it lol.. but my god you will have a lot to tick off your list when you arrive and its not all plain sailing but thats part of the adventure. I think were feeling quite settled in and nothing has been any great hassle to be honest (apart from Telstra) haha I could go through a list of everything weve done but its nearly bedtime! If you want any info or a heads up on anything were more than happy to help now that weve "been there done it" haha Gav
  3. Yeah fair enough. I just checked emirates again. We get a 30kgs hold luggage case each and a 10kg cabin bag each the excess baggage charges are in the pic below if it works If not.. For one extra case of 25 kilos, emirates are asking for over £1100. It's unbelievable.
  4. Ahhh I see what you mean. When you work it out like that it makes sense! 6 extra bags though.. jeezo! I had a look at a parcel company and they will supply 2 large boxes (54x40x40cm) roughly... and ship from Glasgow to Perth for £200 approx. Box is 30kgs each I'm estimating. I'm going to weigh everything I want to take and get a proper quote tomorrow. Failing that I'll try and ship the full box
  5. I though if taking a mechanics type toolbox full of tools trough customs it had to be held in quarantine for a length of time before they are released. I have heard from various people this is usually 3 months. I though it might also be cheaper to leave the box and package up the tools and send them alone. Wooba. Can I ask how your going about taking them as excess baggage. I could probably fit all my tools into one large luggage case. But weight wise I would need to split them between two. But additional luggage onto emirates is absolutley extortionate. Like more than the price of the flights
  6. Hi Guys, We have recently been granted our skilled independent permanent residency visa so now we're getting ready to move. I am a mechanic and have my own tools in a single stack toolbox, and was dead set on selling them. But now I'm considering just taking them with me and I'm looking for some advice. Is it possible to just fill normal boxes or duffel bags with my tools and ship over as normal freight. How much do you reckon this would cost. To ship over my toolbox would be a nightmare and expensive and would sit in quarantine for 3 months. Thank you very much guys for your help.
  7. hahaha i know im sorry to rub it in lol.. yeah thats what everyone said, our bags have been packed since christmas lol.. we are going with emirates from Glasgow to Perth via Dubai, Im a mechanic by trade although Ive been working for a Generator company for the past two years, who fortunatley operate worldwide and have 3 depots in WA alone, with one in Perth! so Ideally im trying to get a position working with the team there! just need to be there now tbh
  8. hahaha thank you very much! i forgot to add in we have already booked out flights and our hire car lol, just in the process of sorting our leaving party!! as you can imagine I have made the obligatory facebook posts telling family and friends and much like yourself, the reaction has been awsome lol. We touch down in Perth on the 25th May aaahhh
  9. Hi guys, Good news.. Our application was lodged on the 8th of Feb. Had a case officer after 4 weeks and was asked for police checks and medicals.. done all that.. a week after the medical was uploaded our visa was granted.. Wooohoooo.. It was granted on tuesday last week. Sooooo quick.. hope you guys are making good progress
  10. Hi Jodipodi, we have had a bit of progress in recent days. We got told we had our case offer and they have requested medicals and police checks. We have done the health questionnaire and have booked our medicals today! Police checks is going to be tonights task. Seems quite soon so far
  11. thats good!! how do you find the process with the agent?? i see a lot of posts on facebook about how its a waste of money and you still need to do everything yourself etc etc. Our agent has been fantastic and i feel like we've done absolutely nothing apart from pay for it all. Yeah were just waiting for a case officer which we have been told can take a month, then once they ask for police checks and medicals, its a waiting game from there again. I have been quoted upto 3 months in total
  12. Hey, that's excellent news pal!! All the best.. hope it doesn't take too long.. I think ours was 2 weeks or 15 days exactly.. keep us posted!!
  13. myself and my partner are still kind of at home, so its a couple of cases for us, bank accounts are open, savings ready to go, etc etc, its just a case of finding work n getting something sorted when we arrive, then the usual, flat and car etc etc and yeah same as yourself, stick for as long as we can and enjoy it
  14. I don't have any concrete plans as such time wise, but I i have planned exactly what im going to do when i get that bit of paper, and were just so eager to get it. once its official we can really get the ball rolling. have wanted this for the past decade and have spent the past year sorting out things to go. I am honestly ready to fling my clothes in a bag and go tomorrow, its really that easy now!
  15. awww really, i really really hope not!! thats a nightmare
  16. Wee update.. The Visa has now been lodged to DIPB.. just a matter of waiting now... has anyone have an idea or any experience of how long this part usually takes?
  17. Yeah not atall.. Our agent was very cautious and did advice upto 3 months.. I phoned them after the 15days asking for any info just hoping.. They said could be anything between 1 and 12 weeks.. and I got a phone call back that night with the good news
  18. Hi jodipodi, That's excellent.. Once we submitted our EOI it took 6 weeks exactly to be invited and once we applied it it took about 15-16days.. which wasn't too bad at all.. We now have our state sponsorship and have applied for our main visa.. which shouldn't be too long now
  19. Hi Joe, thanks very much for the info mate thats fantastic. yeah ive been doing a bit of research on the trails near perth. im based in glasgow so a 40 minute drive is no issues to get to the trails from perth. some of the trails and cross country stuff looks quite good. ive saved alot of website in my favourites and have just been going through them all. would be good to get involved in the enduro races and stuff like that. yeah ive heard of sam hill, cannot wait till the the UCI World Sup starts back again. been looking at bikes today aswell from some bikes shops in perth, unsure whether to stick to a full susser or go to a hardtail again
  20. Hi!! Thanks very much for the advice lol, that's good that you obviously know what we have here and can offer a sound comparison. As much as I enjoy my mountain biking I dont do anywhere near as much as id like and im not very near the skill lever required for Inners, im happy sticking to the red route at Glenners! as for the stay in Scotland bit.. Nooo Wayyyy.. there would need to be ALOT more negatives other than a lack of beasty mountain bike trails to stop me going. It breaks my heart to sell my mountain bike here before i go (need a new bike lol?) and it breaks my heart even more to think my new hobby might be more focused on road biking, but i enjoy cycling and getting out and about and its all about that for me. We shall see what happens lol again thank you very much your reply
  21. Thank very much guys thats excellent, got some time off work so im going to sit today and do some proper digging. were moving out in June time and my first priority will be the mountain biking haha (after the job and house and work and bank account and all the other boring stuff obviously haha). should be a good way to meet some people out there!
  22. Does any one have any experience/places/trails/tips etc. I'm from Scotland and we have a pretty big and lively mountain bike scene here.
  23. Yeah I totally agree.. I have no idea who told him he can't pay tax in any other state and is tied to WA.
  24. hi, looking for some info from some of you experienced visa people. Any info on working and paying tax in a state that your not sponsored by In a nutshell.. I have an Electrician friend out in Perth on a 190 (state sponsorship visa). He is coming up to the end of his 2 years in April but cant actually find work and is thinking he may need to come home to the UK. I am going out to Aus soon on a 190 visa (mechanic) and have been told that working in your state of sponsorship is only a moral obligation and that you are not so much "tied" there for the first 2 years. So i have advised my friend to try and move state to see if there is work there, i.e. move to NWS or QLD, however, he has been told he CAN move state BUT, he CANNOT work, as he is sponsored by WA and is not allowed to pay tax anywhere else other than WA until his 2 years is up, which will be in April. Can anyone offer any sound advise or clarification on this please.. Thank you in advance!
  25. Hi Captain C. I am planning to move out an a 190 visa via NSW sponsorship, however I may be offered a job in Perth. Is there any restrictions on accepting this job and working there.. I.e. address, bank account reasons or tax reasons. Basically anything atall that may come into question. Thanks very much for your help
