  1. Thanks everyone for the replies. Have looked online at the area I want to live and could get somewhere nice for 350 pw or if I went basic about 250. Speaking to my son I figure if we said 4000 pm then should be ok so this is in line with gbye grey skys estimates. To be honest it is all conjecture but am trying to look at all my options. Waiting on the proposed new visas in July to see

  2. Hard one as everyone's expectations are different.

Personally, I think and "ok" lifestyle, in a decent but not spectacular area would be about $100k a year.

    Jeez

I hope you are talking about going out every week on that figure! How does any one manage to be in oz while waiting on a parental visa if that's the case.

  3. Not sure if this is the right forum. If we wanted to live in brisbane whilst waiting on parental visa how much would we need to live on. Rent one or two bed in suburb two people not totally breadline but not too extravagent. I know we can only do the 12 months in 18.

  4. Thanks for this guys. My folks have fired the starting gun & going to see an emigration agent. They mentioned about the changes coming in July. Hopefully with Brexit it will become easier too. Hopefully there will be an argument for the uk to enter into a migration agreement similar to the one New Zealand has...

Is there a special arrangement for UK citizens to New Zealand

  5. I know that at my age I cannot get the skilled visa. We have a son and grandchild living in Australia and wish to move there. Looking at my options to move.

    1. Wait on son to get pr and then have him sponsor us - understand cost, not sure if he has to have pr for a certain length of time first. Also the contributory visa takes about 2 years so would rather go sooner if possible.

    2. 457 sponsored visa - would have to get job first and am unsure how to go about this. Have been on different recruitment sites but get overwhelmed. My degree is in HR.

    3. Student visa - there are big costs with this and can't work full time but it would be quicker.

Are there any other ways or what would your advice be on the above options? I know that the government is currently looking at family visas so hopefully something will come up.

  6. My question is whether there is any rule that says you can't apply for another visa whilst on a student visa. I am sure that people on student visas may meet australians and apply for the partner visa? My intention would be to use the time to study and spend time with family. At the end it of the course then I would leave unless I had another valid visa to stay.

  7. Maggiemay I was not aware that there is an age cap on student visas. If I was going down this route it would be to study something I really wanted to do so it would be genuine for that purpose.

Nemesis I refer to the changes being planned - they are currently undertaking a consultation process and this should come out in July. they are trying to make it a bit easier for families.

  8. How long do you have to have PR before you can sponsor parents for contributory parental visa?

What is the difference between the temporary and permanent parental visas? Do they take same amount of time to process?

Could you be on a student visa in Australia and apply for parental visa? In other words is there a way of living in Australia while waiting?

  9. Son is currently in Australia and gandchild due soon. Just wondering if it would be possible for me to go over on a student visa for a couple of years which would enable me to help out. I understand that there are fees involved and would only be able to work 20 hours a week and would probably have to show I have some money but is it doable? Has anyone done this with a view to applying for contributory parent visa later down the line?

  10. How long do you have to go back for the police checks for parental and other visas? I thought it was just ten years but reading some other threads now realise it may be longer. Although I am not at the stage of applying yet will need to do some digging to remember my addresses. Do you also need to provide definitive dates of when you lived where? Gulp!

  11. Thanks Verystormy. I am aware from your previous helpful advice that it is temporary. I would hope that by then my son would be in a position to sponsor me (though I know this costs). Even if that didn't come to pass I am prepared . If I was going on a 457 I would probably have taken early retirement here with an okay pension. At this stage I am exploring options without incurring huge costs.

  12.

Dont recall seeing anything like that, and i dont think there are looking at sponsorship at the moment, however it is a global IT company, so if you have a look at the usual suspects and check out their job boards you might have some luck
Thanks Kevsan for the quick reply. Will keep on looking.
  13. Keysan I am currently looking at HR jobs and 457 sponsorship but I seem to be the same in that I don't fit into the category. My experience would be very much int he area of employee relations (but not in Australia), supporting staff through coaching and mediation, training and development etc. Don't suppose your company has anything like that?

  14. Thanks for the replies guys. The Diploma will let him get work in private industry. Does anyone know if the student visa has to be a fulltime course or could an online course be an option as that would be cheaper.

  15. Have a son who is coming to the end of his WHV and wants to stay on. He has been studying part time as well as working in order to become a paramedic. So far he has obtained the Certificate IV in Healthcare Ambulance and wants to continue on to do a Diploma in Paramedical Science. He was hoping that the certificate would be enough to get sponsorship to stay on but I am not sure it will and he probably won't have time to organise anything. He is thinking of converting to a student visa but does not have the money to pay upfront for college. Is there anyway he can get a student loan out there?

Does anyone have any advice on what he can do?

  16. Will be in Brisbane for four weeks from mid June. We would like to see the barrier reef and maybe do some snorkling. We will have access to a car. Where is the closest and best point to do this from? How far is it from Brisbane. Don't mind doing a weekend.

Also any other things to do in Brisbane?
