  1. The current govt supports rich get richer scheme.. its no doubt their supporters are more interested in a false economy of separating the advantaged over the disadvantaged.. the bust part of the boom cycle is just about to happen... just look at the dollar fall from above parity to 75c now.. dont even mention the pound... ... Im awaiting the bust up of this nefarious scheme that the blind and money hungry despots have managed to dupe the other blind and money hungry voters... a sad reality for honest hardworking Australians...

  2. Thanks for the view from the right there, unfortunately I don't believe that Cameron is interested in anybody but his own privileged class so I think unless you are in his class you might find yourself lumped in with all the disadvantaged classes you identified, but lovely to hear a full on right wing rant straight out of UKIP'S handbook, sounds very similar to the Nuremberg speeches of the 1930's.

Yes I agree...that take is straight out of a post 3rd reich manifesto.. xenophobic and rooted in fixation on blame toward minorities. Its a typical rightarded ideology.

  3. It certainly hasn't uplifted the standard of the area around Hyde, I can assure you of that. I was back there last November and had to go to a bike shop on the main street for an inner tube. I left the old borrowed mountain bike outside and the lady told me to bring it into the shop or it might disappear. The main street used to be thriving and full of little shops. They are mostly boarded up now. The market used to be fantastic with family run stalls passed down from generations of locals. We used to get a lot of our food from there, used to have a great deli. It's now full of stalls selling jeans and jumpers and tack.

The EU gave Hyde a massive grant as they realised the Town centre was becoming run down. They spent thousands on new market stalls and plant stands all over the place. Would be really nice if anyone looked after it.

Just look at Portobello Road markets, the area used to be run down, cheap housing, working class, spanish refugees from the civil war...turn the clock around and its now prime real estate and generating tons of quid from being a major tourist attraction..

  4. They've not caused a lot of mayhem yet. Just a couple of cases that made the news. One in town and one in Scarborough that was laughable. I never said they caused mayhem flag, they are your words. When did I say that about Vietnamese in general? I don't think I did. Maybe it was about the guys in 4 corners who were running the white vans around.

It wasn't my kids school BTW flag, we left before he would have ended up there. He was only 2 when we came.

@Paul I highly doubt Gujarati would be the main language in that school you mention. Just because the children speak it as a second language doesnt mean it will be a main language at the school. Perception isnt reality and the national curriculum is not run by Gujaratis. Which school was it anyway?

  5. I think there's every chance, even if done on a case by case basis that people from those countries would be turned back. It's not because of where they came from though. It's because they either pose a threat to Australia's security, or aren't really refugees.

The Somali's have already started causing trouble in Perth. There's been cases of them walking roud the City in gangs, attacking people and claiming it as their "turf". I suppose they thought they could get away with it but they actually caught a few and did something about it. They don't exactly make themselves welcome do they?

Somali youths .. yes there are isolated incidents with them... its a problem...they want to be lkke a gang...There are also isolated incidents with Bikie gangs... and other gangs... Hammerskins a supremist gang of violence..... These are not from refugee groups... at least im not aware

So some Somali youths take to gangs..

Are we to conclude Somali refugees are pre destined to cause social problems via gangs?

  6. Yes I agree that they should be assessed case by case however public opinion (and that which has been expressed on this thread) is that there is little care or hope in the world that they will get in here just because they are from Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma or (list African country of choice here).

Im not disagreeing that refugee intake should be limited but Im seeing a blanket lack of compassion because the refugees in question here come from 'these' countries.

  7. Well if those Swedes and Danes don't make the points they won't be getting in will they. Just like coming from the UK and you don't make the points. I think as long as anyone is coming with the intention of integrating, not bringing their troubles with them, then they could fit in no problem.

Yes but prospective 'migrants' and 'refugees' do not come under the same entrance requirements.

We are talking asylum seekers and refugees here.

  8. Their loss was our gain Gee.

Dont disagree here paul... but my point that the commonwealth didnt originally see Oz as a colony because of its 'potential' resource sector.. it was seen as a penal colony. The worst of it being Van Diemens land.... (present Tasmania)

  9. That's the whole point though isn't it gee? letting the wrong people in can mess the whole country up for everybody. The points system sort of does that too, keeps some people out that would just be a drain on resources.

Yes but my point is how do we know these Swedes and Danes are not the 'wrong' people.. after all their ancestors were despised as evil invaders of Britain.... or are we turning a blind eye just because of what they are presently perceived as ... on the outside.. ?

  10. That's just about what any other successful country has done though gee. The reason Aus was claimed by the crown all those years ago was because of the abundant resources. Good place to send convicts to was just a bonus. I think they made the best of it and there's still loads of resources left for us to still make money out of. Both on the land and under the sea. Not many places (if any) in the World would be in a better position, as long as resources hold their price.

The claim was more of a default as neither the French nor Dutch nor Chinese even before them..for that matter saw any potential circa 17-18 century.. and part of that was extreme distance to travel to....the convicts were sent as it was one of the farthest place on the known oceanic chart south of hemisphere.. colonisation was just a bi- product of convict settlement.. only later on was it realised and discovered ....gold etc...

  11. Lets just say hypothetically...If a country like Sweden or Denmark had a political coup and refugees from that country chose to arrive as asylum seekers by boat, I wonder how many of you against the current refugees arriving from a more 'non desirable' 'non- european' background or culture.... would feel.

  12. By any standards, looking at what has been achieved in little over two hundred years, starting from practically nothing, Australia has been a remarkable success, especially when you compare Australia to so many other countries, as rich as Australia, and with histories stretching back thousands of years.

Australia's cities developed along the coast because that is where they needed to be. Many of the USA's biggest cities are along the coastline, and if they are inland, they are invariably located on major inland waterways..

Dont forget that the history stretching back tens of thousands of years was almost eradicated in the process...in just over 2 of those hundred years.. and without the exploitation of abundant land resources.. yes we wouldnt be what we are now...

  13. So you are saying that the 'lot' of the poorer person in society has got steadily worse, rather than better, since, say, Medieval times?

    No ..

But we can attest that the present western model has not solved the issue of poverty, homeless, economic racism .. despite the huge amount present wealth accumulation by the select few.

  14. Rather than the good old days when how fast you were, how good a shot for hunting and how tough your tribe was dictated how long you would survive. Just how it is Gee. We have to adapt.

Its now the 21st century if you compare the chances of a baby born to a family of accountants living in Dalkeith vs a baby born to a displaced couple in the Kimberleys.. you do the math.. ...adapt you say?

  15. That's the point though Tink. Unfortunately some animals (and human beings) will always be more equal than others. Animals simply because they are bigger, faster and can eat the unlucky slower, weaker ones and humans because they've been lucky to be in the right place and got qualifications and experience.

Humans .. because wealth, the colour of your culture and govt policies that favour the richer classes with more assets dictate your survival chances..

  16. I'd love to think that's all there was to it but there are a lot of them economic migrants. The Vietnamese didn't have an axe to grind with the Western World when they came here, like a lot of the current refugees. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. I wouldn't say the Vietnamese are any more hard working than anyone else coming in. A lot of them have been exploited by big business and their own countrymen and used as cheap labour. A few of them featured on 4 corners a couple of weeks ago.

If you look back at the Vietnam war and the aftermath.. displaced peoples from Vietnam... the war and destruction of a country by USA and its allies including Australians .. are you saying they just put on a happy face and jumped on a boat looking for the suburban Aussie dream?

  17. As much as I would like to agree with you Tink, in a perfect world, where everyone just wanted to get on with everyone else and just make a good life for themselves it would be fine.

But in the real world, where a lot of these people are fleeing where they have lived for centuries, because of the problems brought on by their own countrymen, beliefs, tribal warfare and power hungry warmongers the only solution is for them to stand as a nation and sort out their own countries. Not spread their hate, incompatibility, problems, beliefs all over the rest of the world so we are just one gigantic warmongering mess.

They are escaping oppression. They are not intent in continuing the oppression they are escaping from. Did the Vietnamese boat people bring in... "hate, incompatibility, problems, beliefs all over the rest of the world" to Australia in the late 70s? No they have been instrumental in introducing a hard working ethic.. more so than other 'migrants ' from western countries have brought in.
