  1. of course we're gonna kick some ozzy butt!
  2. hiya, sounds like you're sorted, lol. I've applied for a few grad schemes in oz, but they came to nothing. Applied for a few random jobs across europe, in aberdeen where they have the oil stuff etc etc, but just hard for inexperienced people to get on the career ladder as you said so yourself. I'm just applying for anything atm, and have been getting loads of interviews for data admin stuff (2-3 years experience now), but there's only so much of this I can do before I'll go crazy I think - gonna keep temping in this until hopefully I get something even remotely relevant to geophysics/geology or mining or oil & gas. Thanks for those websites, had a look at infomine.com but will check out jobs4mining
  3. I'm really flexible with what i'm willing to do. I'm a Geophysics graduate from a good uni and have a pretty solid geology background too. I'd be interested in anything from exploration to manual work to even learning to operate machinery. I also have 10 years climbing experience and am good with ropes and very physically fit. My parents are from the desert and I feel i'm somewhat well adapted to hot desert climates which is also a bonus! . On the serious side I have a lot of raw talent but am looking for that one lucky break that would allow me to gain some experience in something so I can get over there on that merit. Not blowing my own trumpet or anything but i got 4A*'s 5A's, B at GCSE, 4A's at a-level inc. maths, f maths, physics and geog, got into oxford uni to study maths before dropping out to study geophysics at ucl but I can't get squat here. It's about who you know/experience and I have no relevant mining experience and i don't know anyone in the sector! My dad and uncles are all carpenters so not like I can get into mining by working with them for a bit . I have experience as a data administrator and as an analyst and those are the only positions i'm getting interviews for - no one in the energy or resources sector gives a monkeys for inexperienced folks unfortunately. Oh well....that's life i guess lol! Hopefully one day i'll get my break, then i'll prove how useful i can be. P.S. check out that article when you get a sec - it's quite funny! Check this one out too guys! Hilarious!: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4827199/chinese-girl-mistook-bottle-of-sperm-given-to-her-as-gift-for-moisturiser.html gotta love the sun
  4. ah, so you need to be a buff body builder tomboy to get a job in oz? ...might give that a go someday if things in the uk get anymore desperate, hehe
  5. Hi guys, I just read this in the sun: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article4822843.ece Ignore all the cougar stuff - at the end it says he's now in oz working in a copper mine. I am trying to find a way of getting into the australian mining sector. This guy looks like he was relatively inexperienced and he still somehow managed to make it. I was wondering if anyone here has any advice on how I can emulate his achievements in obtaining a mining job? Unfortunately I have no working holiday visa! Is there any possibility i could get sponsored by a mining company to work down there? How did this guy in the article make it? Any ideas? Thanks guys,
  6. they hate us because we keep kicking their arse in cricket
  7. hi guys, I was just wondering how you guys got to move to oz? Were you sponsored or something? I want to move down there as I can't get a job in london and wanted to try my luck in oz in the mining sector or something. Need ideas!!!! I just wish I had some kind of trade so that i could get out there...I'm a grad. with non relevant work experience to mining so in no-mans land lol.
  8. only germany and canada? What's Australia's credit rating? I thought they were AAA too? haha.
  9. Sounds like london, lol! Sorry to hear the job market there is crap. I've been job hunting for 2 years and i've only been able to get temp work - nothing permanent. All this fancy education and i can't get diddly squat. My mum's telling me to go to australia illegally on a holiday visa and get a job there, but I told her it doesn't work like that, and you've just given me another reason not to pursue a dream job down under!
  10. What in gods name! This is insane! And there are british nationals that are living in cramped conditions and can't get anywhere else to move on because the council doesn't deem their needs urgent! The england sun said that the lady might not take up her £400 000 house up because of the abuse she's been getting. Unsurprising the abuse though...what a scrounger!
  11. i visited oz in 2010 on a year long working holiday visa and the place didn't click. Flew into melbourne, stayed a week and never really settled - the place felt a bit too artificial if any brits know what i mean. Then I flew to perth. Although i liked the the islands on the coast, the whole perth thing didn't feel right either...again, felt a bit too fake and superficial. So then i went to cairns after 8 days. Cairns was hot, tropical and fairly clean but again, i just couldn't see myself living there. At this point I should tell you I was born and raised in london, so maybe i've been spoilt or something. Then I went down the east coast to sydney and all the places I went to I felt I could visit it, no problem, but I couldn't see myself living anywhere. It's like going on holiday and then getting sick of being on holiday and wishing you were at home feeling. That's my underlying memory of Oz. New zealand, the country I went to before coming to oz was amazing on the other hand. It was shear paradise for me. I could see myself living in a lot of places from te anau, otago, rotorua, nelson, wanaka and so forth . Funny how everytime I see Australia on TV and on programs like "moving down under" or whatever it's called I think it's amazing, but when I actually went there I didn't feel it too homely and welcoming. The whole place felt a bit too new and plastic-y if anyone knows what i mean? Don't get me wrong, the people were nice and everything seems dreamy clean and perfect, but maybe it was just that it was too superficial and perfect, for me anyway
  12. Hi everyone, i had a look on the australian immigration website a few times on a few different occasions and I can't find the answer to this question so am posting it. I was wondering whether I could get residency or a work permit or something that would allow me to work in australia? I've already 'used' my working holiday visa in 2010 (but didn't actually work!). But the job market is REALLY crap in the UK at the moment i'm considering emigrating to Oz and trying my luck down there. So summary: if my cousin lives in oz, can i move there? Oh if someone could link me to the relevant weblink so i could read more into it i'd be most grateful because i can't find it! Cheers, P
  13. I just had a thought. Would sending a CV to a few agencies in Oz speculatively enquiring about grad jobs be any good? I'm getting interviews from insurance companies through agencies in the UK, but ideally want to work in the natural resources sector in the long run (oil/mining). I got family in perth and might be able to get residency through them if i tried hard enough. The small companies must employ grads out there through speculative enquiries etc. So if i just found some random small companies exploring in queensland, near brisbane, near broome or perth, and just fired off a CV or covering letter - nothing to lose right?
  14. i've applied to schlumberger and halliburton, sent speculative letters to some smaller companies that focus on data processing. Off the top of your head Ves, what service companies do you know? Just so i can tick off the ones i've applied to and maybe get some new names off you I may have overlooked Thanks,
  15. Yup, i got one and wasted it! . Oh well! I've applied for a few oil grad schemes here and got a few interviews lined for for Catastrophe modelling jobs. Plan is now to do some cat modelling work in london and see where i am in a few years time! From what I hear the oil jobs need msc's and all that malarky so i probably won't get onto those grad schemes. Also Ves, it sounds like Australia is headed the same way as Europe in terms of slowing down. Sucky tbh, but ah well...on the bright side it'll hopefully give more people to take a chill pill and travel! (that's if they've not already spent all their money boozing!)
