Can those of you with babies/young children advise whether I can bring my car seats to Australia. I heard that UK ones don't meet the Australian standards and therefore in the event of an accident you wouldn't be insured? Are there any in the UK that are widely used in Aus as I will be buying one soon? Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the replies. I am a midwife and my Hubble is a podiatrist.

The plan is not to be commuting. Obviously I can't be 100% sure, but my husband works in healthcare as do I and there are lots of options on the central coast.

Hi, Anyone on the central coast? We are planning to move out in the next 6months, we have our visas. We did a reccie about 18mths ago and liked lots of areas but didn't particularly find anywhere we really wanted to live. Would love opinions on nice family friendly areas (we have a 3&1 yr old). We hopefully won't need to commute to Sydney so we can consider any area. Would love somewhere with a nice community feel. Any ideas/opinions? Many thanks.

Hi, My husband would like to have a complete change of career when we get to Australia next year. He is seriously thinking about training to be an electrician but I cant find any info on how he would go about this as he is not typically the kind of apprentice you would expect as he is in his late 30's. Do companies offer apprentiships for mature trainees? Also any idea how much he could expect to earn whilst training? We will have PR. Thank you

That's really disappointing, how can they justify such ridiculous charges?

yes, I asked my agent this as I thought I might be pregnant and they would have just deferred everything until after the baby was born and then added the baby on. Much cheaper to do it this way as well as I believe you don't pay any extra for the baby, but if you have a baby after you have your medicals/visa granted then you have to pay to add the baby on which is quite expensive. -
uh oh we have both so we're screwed!!!:biglaugh:

why are they so strict with dogs, do most families with dogs in Aus keep them outside?

Great tip cairnzees! Thank you!

I'd love to hear peoples experiences please? I'm a bit worried that hardly any of the rentals on realestate.com seem to accept pets. I know others have said to ignore this as often they don't advertise iT but will accept a dog, but i'm concerned our choice of rental is going to be significantly reduced with our dog. Have others found this? we will be looking in the Central Coast area of NSW. Thanks

Great thanks, I will have a look at those.

Short Term Rentals - How easy is it to find ?

airbnb is another useful site we've used. -
I am a midwife (not is Aus yet) and I have a friend who is a mw out there. Private hospitals you are more like an obstetric nurse as women have obstetricians, even the low risk women. Public hospitals are the same as the UK, however I hear Aus is about 10yrs behind the UK In many ways, such as there are very few home births which is disappointing. In general I don't think mw's suture in Aus either which I find a bit strange, they get the doctors to do it, although this might not be everywhere!

You can go on woolworths or coles online and do a 'shop' to give you an idea of costs, although like everywhere, i'm sure when you get to know an area you find out where to go to get the best deals!

trabonita replied to JulieannDunning's topic in New South Wales
Hi, we will be in that area at the same time doing our reccie! I have heard there are many lovely places around there but, Gosford itself isn't anything special. i'm sure someone more helpful will respond! Good luck with the move. -
Hi, just wondering if any one knows of an Australian version of Martins money saving expert or something similar? Thanks

My husband is emigrating as a podiatrist and will get work as this for 6/12mths and then plans to do something totally different. We see it as an opportunity for him to do something he will enjoy as we plan to only have a very small mortgage. I say go for it! -
Thanks for the replies. It was a house on the Central Coast NSW I had spotted on realestate.com. So if the guide price is $450,000 what price does the auctioneer usually start from? I did wonder why it was up for auction, looked like a really nice house in good condition, just wondered if auction was a way of picking up a good deal but it appears probably not!
