We are moving back to the UK early (Feb) 2018, and have 2 Jack Russell/Fox Terrier crosses who we would like to take with us. (There's no way the wife is leaving if we don't take them!!) What is a reasonable time scale to work to, (jabs, booking flights, organising a company to ship them,) to ensure EVERYTHING goes smoothly? Also, when we bought the dogs, they were already chipped, how do we go about getting them rechipped under the names we now know them as? Thanks in advance, Thom
  5. Andrew, if you had $200,000 in a bank account, and wanted the best return on it over a period of say 3 years, what would you do with it? The money would not be touched over that period. Crystal ball type possible return figures would be interesting too! Cheers mate, Thom ETA: prefer low risk dabblings, rather than high return higher risk.
  6. When we were courting my wife lived in Australia, I lived in Cornwall. We maintained a relationship like this for two years. We only spent 6 weeks, (3 in Cornwall, 3 in Australia,) actually together before we got married and I moved out here. That was 15 years ago.
  7. She is an Aussie citizen, thanks Marisa. She's also holder of a very distinguished Australian medal. :-)
  8. I won't bore you by restating our plans again! Her indoors is as Aussie as Dame Edna riding a kangaroo, eating a meat pie, and singing "Waltzin' Matilda," at an AFT match on Uluru. BUT, she was born in Cardiff! She left there at a year old, and has lived in Aus ever since. Her birth was registered in Cardiff (1963) and she has a pommy birth certificate. Does this mean she is eligible to register as a Pom?
  9. Looking forward to a daily pasty when I'm back! Warrens, Rowes, Phillips of Hayle, Horse and Jockey in Porthleven, Anne Mullers pasty shop on the Lizard, Aunty Mays in Newlyn, never short of choice!!!
  10. Cheers people, that's very heartening.
  11. In early 2018, as you may know, me and her indoors will be moving to Cornwall to live and retire. We have a mortgage free house in Cornwall, and will move into that. We're trying to plan our budget, except we keep being told that "Cornwall is a very expensive place to live!" I lived in Cornwall from 1991 to 2003, and at that time didn't consider it remarkably any more expensive than the rest of the country. I'd lived all over the UK before that. Yes, we realise that Cornwall has a low wage economy, based around tourism. Also that transport costs can be high. But neither of those would greatly affect us. Can anyone offer help and advice on the costs of living in Cornwall presently please?

    Yep, avoid dying.

Thanks, but men normally have shorter lifespans, and my wife is a few years younger than me.

Well actually, I was thinking of giving it a miss this lifetime.

    Will this work?

Nope, not quite. We will live on my super lump sum for 6 years, then my wife's super when it matures. We will also have my modest NHS super, and a UK pension, to top these up.

I doubt I'll live until I'm 87, that's too long! But thanks for all the tips Marisa, you're very kind. My wife has been in the public service super scheme since she was 19 years old, the buggers better make it worth her while!

    Will this work?

Not quite no. My wife will take her super as a pension, to last her after I kark it. She will move back to Australia after that event.

Doing it using your figures I get 8.2 years. That's far more than the number of years we'll need, and not even factoring my NHS pension, and UK pension into the pot. Then after 6 years my wife's super kicks in, and that's worth well over a $million currently.

We only need it to last 6 years Marisa, that's why I gave very conservative figure. I'll try it again with yours.

Hi Diane, we've done a check and contacted the UK pensions agency, I should get a UK pension when I hit 66.

    Thanks both!! According to that site Marisa, and using careful figures;

I've asked similar questions here before, but it;'s getting close to the planning stage for us now, so I'm looking for thoughts and advice! Our hope, and it is just a hope, is this; if my super has enough in it, and factoring in a proposal that we will work another year, then in Nov 2017, next year, we will retire. Sounds neat eh? I will be nearly 59 yrs old, and my missus will be 54. We need enough cash in my superannuation to give us £25,000 a year to live on in the UK. (We have a mortgage free house in Cornwall.) If we have that sum , I will take my super as a lump sum, invest half of it in long term high interest accounts here in Australia, as Aussie interest rates are far better than the UK ones at present. Putting half into savings accounts means it’s not just sitting idly in a bank, but is actually earning interest for us. The other day, thanks to information provided by here, I looked into whether or not I had any NHS pension from the years I worked for them, (1991 to 2003, with a small break.) Turns out I have a small fund, which will pay £3463.00 pa and a £10,300.00 lump sum on hitting retirement age, or £3037.00 pa and £9,500.00 lump if I were to take it now. So that’s another handy £66.00 per week, once I hit 60 or so. We’ll probably leave this grow, and only use it if sh!t and fan collide. When the time is ripe, we’ll pack up everything we own here, and get it shipped over to Blighty. With the rest of the money in short-term, easy-access, saving accounts, I will move back to Cornwall in Feb 2018. Once here I will contract, and get a gutting and redesign/rebuild, of the interior of our house done, and possibly a conservatory put on the front. The wife and the mutts will join me sometime during all this malarkey. If we can survive on my superannuation lump sum until the wife hits 59, then her superannuation will kick in, and after that we’ll live like the proverbial pigs in .... PS. If this sounds a bit smug or gloating, believe me it’s not meant to. Tell the truth we’re actually crapping ourselves at the risk of it all, as there’s so many factors that could muck up for us.
