Further afield, Barwon Heads, Torquay, Ocean Grove and Jan Juc are also nice areas along the coast. Avoid: Corio, Whittington and Norlane. Keep in mind that you will most likely have to provide your own fridge and washer/dryer, as these are not commonly provided in rental properties. If you want to live by the sea, I suggest you check out Barwon Heads (a small seaside town close to Ocean Grove) and maybe rent a house there for a few months. It has safe beaches for small children and a charming village feel. It's my favorite coastal town in the region, and personally, if I could afford it, I would live there.

You will like Belmont. The area between Roslyn Road and the River has some of the loveliest weatherboard homes in Geelong and the properties tend to be built on large lots. Belmont Primary School on Mount Pleasant Road has a stellar reputation, and offers state of the art facilities after having recently undergone major renovations. You should definitely set up an appointment to visit this school with your children.

If you're set on a modern, new home then look in Highton. It has a nice village feel and is close to both the coast and Geelong city. Torquay is lovely in the summer but in the winter, it's dead. Point Cook is a new, soul-sucking, concrete wasteland full of new, boxy housing developments and shopping malls.

Keep an eye on the Poms in Geelong social group for news about pub nights and family meet ups. Keep her busy with sports or hobbies she was involved with prior to your move to Australia. Also get her involved with decorating her bedroom (paint/wallpaper/curtains/etc.) so she feels more at home. If kids have too much time on their hands, that's when the trouble starts and the homesickness sets in.

Manifold Heights and East Geelong are also good areas. Further afield, Barwon Heads is a great little seaside village. Avoid Whittington, Corio and Norlane.

I am afraid there is an absence of "decent" hostel accommodation in Geelong. The Econo Lodge Hacienda Hotel is probably your best choice and I think it is possible to negotiate a deal with the manager if you stay longer than 3 days. http://www.geelongmotel.com.au

Hi, glad you enjoyed Saffron. I have another great recommendation for those looking for South Indian cuisine. It's called Namaste Indian Restaurant and it's located at 104 Lygon Street, Carlton in Melbourne (where all the Italian restaurants are). They have a huge selection of dosas (paper thin crepes made with rice flour - the most popular being the masala dosa). You won't be disappointed! http://www.srsnamaste.com

Agreed, but there is a high incidence of domestic robberies and car thefts because of its proximity to Norlane/Corio. I wouldn't rent or buy there unless there was a security system and/or fencing around the property.

Depends on where you look. The neighborhood past Settlement Rd is pretty dodgy but I think the area close to the river and the streets between Mt. Pleasant and Roslyn Roads such as Peary St, Riverside Terrace, Amundsen Ave., Cambridge St., Oxford St, Rugby St, and Wimmera St. have some of the most beautiful weatherboard homes in Geelong.

Neighborhoods to avoid: Corio, Norlane, Whittington, Breakwater, North Shore and certain areas of Bell Park, Bell Post Hill, Grovedale and Marshall. Neighborhoods to consider: Newtown ($$$), Chillwell ($$$), Geelong, East Geelong (look near the botanical gardens), West Geelong, Belmont, Highton, Wandana Heights , Manifold Heights, Waurn Ponds.
