  1. I have known of firms who have made the employee pay for 457 sponsorship. As the employee was desperate to stay in Oz they were willing to do this
  2. I was in a similar position to original poster myself, but fortunately I had a job (although it was tough, long hours and low wages) which allowed me to continue searching for a better job. I applied for 100's of jobs and sent even more speculative e-mails, with only about 5% replying. It is very demoralising applying for jobs you are more than capable of and not even getting a reply.
  3. A lot of people that were in Oz before me. Also dont think I am the only person who heard of this laid back attitude towards work in Oz. IMO working more hours isnt laid back
  4. Currently back in UK but for what its worth when I look back on my time in Oz Work/life balance and job satisfaction Worse.Worked more hours in Oz than UK for similar wage, never understood all this talk that you do less work in Oz. Job Satisfaction worse, watered down version of my job compared to UK House and creature comforts Same Physical health Same Mental health Same Family life Much better in UK as I had no family in Oz Social life Better Nightlife in Oz imo but better atmosphere in local pubs in UK if you're out for a drink during the day
  5. I was in a similar position to yourself, I was in more of a solid/steady job rather than a good one after I graduated whilst a lot of others in my class failed to get work linked to degree I decided to do a year WHV, was in two minds about leaving the job as I worried it might not work out in Oz but I decided to give it a go anyway. When I returned after a year I was lucky enough to get another job, my employer seen it as a positive that I went away for a year and experienced a different country
  6. I to moved to Brisbane as a qualified professional in construction industry. It took me 7 weeks to get a labouring job and roughly 5-6 months to get a job in my profession. I think you will settle if you find a decent job. I certainly started to enjoy it more when I was working. In my circumstances I left Oz because my WHV was up and my employers revoked the offer of sponsorship when work slowed up. When I returned I realised how much the simple things as you said like watching football at a sensible hour meant to me.

    The weather

I was in Brisbane for the floods, very scary. It rained quite often in Brisbane in my time there. I loved the Brisbane winter weather it was perfect around 24-26 degrees most days. The summer weather was tough going, especially working outside and driving in a car with no a/c. The gloomy weather here in the UK never really bothered me and it wasnt a factor in me deciding to go to Oz in the first place.
  8. Hi, I was in OZ 2010-2011 and I am fully qualified QS with decent experience. It took me 5 months to get a QS job, it is very difficult as many employers want you to have experience of working in Oz, its Catch 22 how are you suppose to get the experience if they wont give you a start? My employer pulled the pin on sponsorship due to cost but I do know some guys who have got sponsored going from a WHV to 457
  9. I was in a similar position to yourself. I had a great time travelling, did some tough jobs then got a good job in my field with possibility of sponsorship. I was pretty settled, met new friends etc but was missing home. I was in a dilemma whether to stay but every one around was telling me I was mad for even considering returning home. My mind was made up when my company started dragging their heels on my sponsorship and with my WHV running out I decided to do a bit more travelling before returning home I have to say I am content at home and got a job within 2 months of returning. I started make the most of having Europe on your door step by going on more weekend breaks etc,
  10. I havent posted on here in awhile but I was in similar position to yourself. I came home after a year in Oz, mainly living in Brisbane. The uncertainty of work made my mid up, my employer was stalling over sponsorship and my WHV was coming to an end. Ideally I would have liked to stay for another year or 2 max. It would have been convenient to get residency but it was a serious investment for something I may never use again I have to say after being home 2 years I do not regret my decision. I have found work in my field, working less hours than in Oz and wages seem to go further. Small things like watching footy at a normal hour now means a lot. I enjoyed Oz and intend to return on a holiday but it was never going to be my home
