  1. I've been reading the posts on this thread and a few, very few are quite amusing. However the purpose of the thread is to knock Tony at all and every opportunity. What do you want for christ sake? Rudd/Gilard/Rudd back again or heaven forbid that muppet Shorten running the show. Tony is doing the best he can with what he's got to work with or, what was left for him to work with.
  2. All well and good unless you were in when it went up, at night when you were asleep.
  3. Utility room in UK parlance. A toilet in the utility room is not an issue. What is an issue is if the toilet itself is amongst the washing machine, dryer etc. To be honest I've never seen a situation like that even in Australia. Surely the correct terminology should be, "cloakroom off of the utility room"
  4. I do not see anything in my post that suggests I can't afford Australia. What I cannot tolerate is being continually ripped off.
  5. Might as well live in a garden shed then. Oops my bad isn't that what those old Queenslanders are? You know the ones that if they catch fire take a whole 12 to 15 minutes before they're a pile of ash on the ground.
  6. I've had a look and sure enough there are a few double glazing suppliers in Canberra and one I found can even supply uPVC ! However the bit that scared me and I would imagine all Australians who considered going the uPVC route was the price, $3000 for one French door. I would expect to do a whole 3 bedroom house for that much. Here it is if anyone's interested; http://www.armadacanberra.com/double-glazed-prices.html
  7. That explains a lot, construction has come a long long way in the UK since 1964. Things that are considered the norm there are unheard of here which is surprising considering what a small world it has become with the internet etc. I think it can only be put down to the Australian resistance to change.
  8. They say that when a Qantas jet lands at Heathrow (or any other non Australian airport) the whining carries on long after the engines have been switched off.
  9. Just wondering. When you decided you wanted to go home was it a gradual thing or was there a defining moment. For me it was the latter, I was watching Will and Kates wedding on TV and the camera was looking down the Mall with all those Union Jacks flying. It gave me goose bumps and I knew in that moment. It's been three years since then and for one reason or another we haven't been able to go, however 2015 is going to be the year.
  10. Do you remember the Ally G sketch where he interviewed people from some or other climate change group? He asked them what would happen if we didn't stop burning fossil fuels etc. The bloke said that England would have a climate like Ibiza. Ally says "all put your hands together and......
  11. Would it be rude to ask where you are from Stephen? If not Australia, how long have you lived here?
  12. No, not different in Queensland, it's just that there's insulation and insulation. Just the same as there are modern (21st century) building practices and then there are Australian building practices.
  13. I think what flybyknight is trying to say is. Fuel, power etc used to be cheap. So with all those uninsulated/poorly insulated houses throughout the country it didn't matter if you ran the aircon (in summer) or heating (in winter) 24/7 because everybody could easily afford it. That was then this is now, prices for those aforementioned utilities have sky rocketed whereas insulation and other modern building practices have hardly progressed at all in Australia. Consequently it has become very difficult, impossible even, for some to be able to run these appliances in their homes.
  14. Bit off topic but hey ho. alt (hold down) then 0163 for £ and alt 0128 for €
  15. Steer away from Seek, the majority of positions posted there don't exist.
  16. Pick one, there's plenty to go round. Mary R, the above is loosely based on a line from David & David's song, "Welcome to the Boomtown". Another on my list of thousands of truly awesome songs. If you go to YouTube, try and get the full length version, it's the one with a firework display for the video.

  18. Nothing wrong with 30°c plus heat, but like someone else said on here, " not all day every day", variety is the spice of life, so they say.
  19. How long ago was it when you were single?
  20. Sorry mate you'll have to help me here, not quite sure what you're saying.
  21. Oh hush my mouth and accept my profound apologies, it's 64.1 million, official figures for 2013 so unless it's jumped up by a stray 5.9 million (the total population of Scotland is 5.3 million) in twelve months you must have got it wrong, can that be so? You know what, a lot of us on here are looking forward to your posts in a couple of years time when you've gotten OVER Australia and the UK is suddenly flavour of the month. If I happen to be the British minister for immigration at that time you can rest assured I will cancel your UK passport.
