  4. what did australia do before the mining boom,it was going ok there are other industries in oz other than mining .billions of people sit on australias doorstep with a rising standard of living and a changing diet not all asian people exist on rice,as a matter of fact they have trouble feeding themselves.australia feeds its own population as well as at least 60 million others in asia and i believe that is not going to stop moreover it is going to rise, combine this with natural growth in asia the mining will still tick over nicely some smaller companies will fall by the wayside but it will not stop. the point is that the country is not exporting to debt ridden nations such as some european countries, its man customers are expanding all beit at differing speeds but they are growing and because of this countrys position i believe will continue to prosper.
  5. 16 US fluid ounces not imperial oz or 473 ml. a pint in australia is 570 ml a schooner is 420
  6. Average pint - $5 bucks (that's a pint, not a pot, or a schooner or any other shi*e) Happy hour - $1 a pint for domesticPetrol - $3.80 a gallon (gone up alot since last time I was there, still OK though) You do realise that US volumes are a lot less than imperial,a pint may not be a pint get the point,us measurements are about 20 percent less than imperial
  7. as i have been recently living in bangkok i thought id pass on a few tips,or things not to do,number 1 if you drop a coin and it rolls away don't put your foot on it ,why you risk being arrested as the coin has the kings head on it and by putting your foot on the coin it is considered disrespectful to the king.2 smokers, the thais are aware of the dangers of smoking even though the price of cigarettes is about 1.5 dollars for 20 ,but they have no smoking zones which are signed ,the signs are that small that you cant see them and you risk a hefty fine if caught, most of the thais are in debt and have no qualms about asking for money there debt is mostly to loan sharks who charge 20 percent interest per day and is collected every day by stand over men,who are sub contract collectors and if they dont get there quota have to put the money in from there own pocket ,so some bashing is done, .why you may ask dont they go to the bank for a loan, well if you have never had money to put in the bank the bank wont give you a loan thus loansharking is a thriving business,id say 2 out of three tais are tied to a loan shark,so asking for money is a way of life.teeth a screw in tooth will cost 1000 aud a filling about 2dollars aud.there are other things i have found out by living with the people but they should not affect you as a tourist.the people are affable, and living in a not to good part of bangkok i have not had any trouble yet. hope this will help somebody contemplating a holiday. i forgot water the thais don.t drink the water from the tap there are reverse osmosis machines dotted around the place where you can fill up cheaply.
  8. things must have changed but when i got my hr licence i went straight from a car licence ,that was in the 90's and in QLD
  9. i haven"t been on this site for quite a while and some would say good as i admit i can get a bit argumentative, i have gone or am going through a divorce which i am quite happy with, and have been living in bangkok for quite a while,as im on the aus pension the money goes a long way there and the place is familiar and not familiar, but ok i will never complain about aus driving ever after living thier, anyway back to the economy three years ago i had numerous arguments with some members on this forum on the aus economy, there argument was that the aus economy was always two years behind the rest of the world my argument was we were in a different position from the rest of the world and were dealing with a country [china] that had no obligation to its population,as in being elected,i wonder now how members see the aus economy continuing for the future.not trying to start any arguments, just interrested for a point of view a few years on from the last financial crisis
