457 vs 176 with july looming question

hi a quick post to see what people think. We are having to speed up our efforts to go due to the eoi rules coming in as of july 1st. We intend to migrate permanantly and at present are considering doing it the 457 route and then apply for permanent residency once in OZ.

Ideally we wanted to be moving early part of next year so we are now in overdrive.

My main question though is are we better off applying for permenant residency now before july 1?

My wife is a deputy sister on a trauma ward in the uk. She is 36 im 40 and a purchasing manager. We would prefer either melbourne, adelaide or possibly brisbane as our destination.

We did engage a migration agent a few years ago but it all fell by the wayside due to family problems(now sorted) and they no longer exist. IS it advisable to use one or not and if we go for the 176? do we still have time and how do you go about getting the sponsorship etc?

thx

Graham.

Hey Graham,

My husband and I are in the exact same situation as you. I have been offered a few jobs on 457 (I am a nurse too) but when I looked at the visa it freaked me out. You are tied to the employer, if you loose your job you have 28 days to find another job with a sponsor or you HAVE to leave OZ but on the plus side its quicker, faster and cheaper.

With regards to the July 2012 changes, I spoke to Ian Harrop (our agent) as we will not make it in time for the July 2012 changes and they said that nurses will get picked to apply its just a matter of when not if. The EOI's will get put into a pool and pulled out accordingly. Does your wife have a lot of experience? Do you know how many points she will have?

With the 176 you can pick our state depending on experience or you could go for the 175? If you wanted to do that before the changes you would have to get a move on as the main applicant needs a 7 or 8 in the IELTS and to get their skills assessed which can take up to 3 months at the moment.

We have decided to go for PR and just wait it out as the 28 day rule scares me and i dont like the idea of being tied to a job or place.

Laura thanks, could you pm your agents info. TBH doing it the 457 way would mean us rushing things in terms of getting out there which wouldnt be ideal. We wanted the move to be april/may next year, so going the 176 route is better if not a bit more expensive. However given we want to move permantly we would have to do it at some point anyhow.

Shell is a deputy sister 10 year qualified with a specialist nursing degree and nursing diploma. Shell is currently doing her AHPRA forms. Do you know what the skills assessment entails? The IELTS looks a little daunting in terms of Shell doesnt really like exams and the test examples look a bit wierd.

Hello garetgax i am a nurse with 10 years experience and am lookin to emigrate with my oh and children in nx 12months. my aphra registration is in process and am looking for sponsorship. was sponsored in Sydney 2004-2006 and they do help with permanent residency after 12 months. i worked in a private hospital and was great, allowed me to travel and never made me feel tied to themhave heard some bad stories on here bt my experience was positive. am now looking for work in queensland due to cost of living so fingers crossed. we was doing independent visa originally bt we want to get over soon as and cheaply as can.am sure ur wife can work anywhere if a trauma sister ha. i know 175/6 is ideal but not the only option x good luck x
