This thread is dedicated to Geoff the rain God himself:wink:

Lava Tubes - Absolutely worth the visit although it's a fair distance from Cairns unless you are coming up for 2 weeks I think you will have too much to do elsewhere.

Bobj recommended it to us when we drove from Darwin across and we often go for the weekend. The train carriages are lovely but they don't have aircon so be warned. The food is to die for especially their steaks. The bat cave is a fantastic experience you stand at the entrance to the cave whilst all the micro bats fly out.

Bless you Kate!

We're planning to stay for 10 days in total. Thanks for all the info it does look fantastic. Will discuss with Mrs X and the little x's to see what they would like to do, I think a trip out to the reef has been mooted.

You know how you said you hadn't seen Possums, I would highly recommend staying 2 nights here http://www.canopytreehouses.com.au

At night the possums come down from the trees and will feed from your hands, the hardest thing is keeping them out of the accommodation. You will also get the wild birds visiting for food and if you stroll down to the river the snapping turtles will come out for food. You will usually always see the resident wild cassowary.

During the day head to Milla Milla falls, Paronella Park, The curtain Fig tree, The Lakes.

Have seen a couple of possums, they look so cute. Shame they ate all the fruit in my garden and took a dump on the car!!!!!

Thanks for all this, getting excited already.....

Ok I am back

Now as your children are 12 and 14 I would highly recommend quad biking (it's not for the faint hearted and Mrs X may wish to go and have a cuppa somewhere or go horse riding instead) there are two companies I would recommend one which is up in Kuranda so it's closer to Cairns http://www.blazingsaddles.com.au/atvquadbikeridetour.html the other is at Daintree Station (this is the one I did as my youngest was under 12 and the only quad bike company that would take someone under 12) http://daintreestation.com

Kerching! That one's proved popular! My youngest went quadbiking in the desert in Dubai last year and it's didn't go too well, I've just asked her if she'd want to give it another go and she said 'SURE!'

Good to see you got your breath back!

Now I suppose we should get on to the reef as it is a must do, although to be honest I haven't had time to get out there myself yet, my eldest has been out with 3 companies and I've been over to Green Island but that's as far as it goes.

Ok Quicksilver is the one that everyone raves about, http://www.quicksilver-cruises.com it isn't that they are any better than the others it's just they have more money to advertise  now Quicksilver is the same group who owns Great Adventures http://www.greatadventures.com.au. Quicksilver is the one that goes from Port Douglas so if you are staying in Cairns then I would opt for Great Adventures instead, although the drive up to Port Douglas is lovely but to be honest I would save this for a day out.

Both have a pontoon out on the reef. The other I would recommend is Reef Magic http://www.reefmagiccruises.com again from Cairns.

Now if you wanted a live aboard you can't get any better than Tusa especially when they have their trips to the cod hole, but you have kids so forget it as you would need to re mortgage http://www.tusadive.com

Now if you want to snorkel and not go out on the main reef have a look at Green Island http://www.greenisland.com.au infact Green Island is best if you stay overnight because after 4pm all the tourists go home and you have it all to yourself. Unfortunately they have just announced that the underwater observatory is closing this weekend along with the paragliding which is a shame especially for those who don't want to get wet. You do have the glass bottom boat but make sure it's not choppy, jee I was ill on that.

Here is green island

Ok you HAVE to do the skyrail and train, http://www.skyrail.com.au/?utm_campaign=Cairns-Attractions&utm_source=Homepage&utm_medium=Visit-Website although the only problem is that you don't get long up there. The cable car is around 1 1/2 hours if you stop off at the two points en route, to be honest you could miss the first one but you have to do the Barron Falls one. Once you reach Kuranda personally I would get the free mini bus shuttle to the top of the town, this is where the markets are and also the animal parks, they are very small but if you want to hold a koala, have a macaw on your shoulder etc then they are a must do, each park you can get around in about 30 minutes and they do a pass that covers the Koala Park, Butterfly World (if you have never seen a Ulysses butterfly then it's nice) and Bird World
