176 Sponsorship

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Since its been a few years since I applied for my own visa, I am not as sure about the current visa process and would like some help.

Looking at the immigration website I am getting very confused.

Basically my sister in law in applying for a skilled visa, 175 / 176, she is a lawyer (yes just what australia needs, another lawyer, I know!!!!), but a nice girl.

Basically, myself and my wife are happy to sponsor her but i am unsure how it works now, so your assistance would be appreciated.

Q. The 176 sponsored visa still appears to be in opertaion and some websites and not on others? What is the reality?

Q. If the answer in no to the above, what is the new process? and how long?

Q. THe the 176 is still in operation great, as I understand it, but can anyone tell me how long a sponsored visa now takes?

Thanks you assistance will save my sister in law a lot time.

A good place to start is with the points test http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/points-fact.pdf

The 176 family sponsored does still exist, but there are no points giving for being family sponsored (unless from regional area and going for 475 provisional visa), and also now requires same number of points as 175 visa. But there is also the 176 state sponsored visa, which requires sponsorship from the state that you are going to live in, but your occupation needs to be on their state migration plan.

Applicants for 176SS are receiving CO within 4 weeks of lodging appliation, 175/176 family sponsored 6-8 months.

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/estimated-allocation-times.htm

SHe will require to have her skills assessed by the relevent assessing body for her occupation, and maybe IELTS for points for visa appliation (having studied in UK should be enough to show english ablility for skills assessment as per NSW) http://www.lpab.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/lpab/legalprofession_overseas_practitioners/legalprofession_overseas_practitioners_english_req.html

Also be aware of the new Skillselect model that has been proposed for 1 Jul 2012, that you need to express an interest and receive an invitaion before you can apply. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/skillselect.htm
