Shipping from the US

I've come to realize that shipping will be the biggest headache we have in this process. My wifes employer threw money at us to do it ourselves instead of handling it for us. I know it may be a stretch but does anyone have any suggestions for companies that ship from the US to Australia?

I would go with Crown Aaron if it were me. They have a good reputation. I am sure there are some equally good shippers from the US but thats the only company I can recommend as I used them myself.

Who ever you go with, maybe you could ensure that Aus. agents, customs and quarantine are included in the fully inclusive price.

I will add that Insurances with the removalists companies do come in more expensive and possibly you could also investigate DIY Insurance with independent agencies for a fraction of the cost.

It is usually beneficial to you to receive 3/4 quotes and play one off against the other.. also you can do your own research on the net as to the company reviews.

Crown also have an office based in Smithfield Sydney http://www.crownrelocations.com.au/

We were coming from Florida to Queensland and used FID, they did everything that was agreed to, and everything went reasonably well. We did wait a little longer than we had thought but that was because some of our belongings raised flags, eg a mounted fish (long story) and some caribbean conch shells.

Well, I stayed up way to late last night requesting quotes for shipping....but it paid off today. I got no less than 10 responses. They ranged from roughly $4000 USD to $8800 USD for a band of services. All were for a 20 foot container door to door but some were load and pack ourselves and others were all inclusive. I have no desire to pack up my house and probably not enough time to do it correctly to prevent damage so we are looking at a door to door service including packing/loading from our home here, all freight and documents, customs clearance and then delivery and unloading to our future home down under. The quote for that was $6100USD. That seems to run fairly consistent with the 3000 pound (sorry, don't know where that symbol is on my keyboard) at a roughly 2 to 1 exchange rate.

The best news of all is my wifes employer did us a HUGE favor by not covering freight. I was pissed at first but they did it on purpose. Instead they just gave us a lump some of "walking around" money so to speak. Since they aren't covering or reimbursing the cost specifically we can use the entire expense as a tax write off. I'll take a bit of a headache setting it up for that!

Crown is coming to our home to see what we have to produce a proper quote. They are the ONLY company that has offered that. They also have an employee that works primarily on relocations through my wifes employer. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
