Guest ABCDiamond
Dentists The only main option for Dental Treatment in Australia are the Private Dentists situated in most suburbs. There are however some Government based Dental Facilities, eg: Dental Teaching Hospitals that are available for certain sections of the population, eg: those holding Health Care Cards. Children have to be paid for the same as Adults, no General Free Service here. Athough most schools have a dental visit annually, and any treatment is free. So try to time the kids toothache with the annual visit of possible Most of the Insurance companies will cover Dental treatment, but be aware to check levels of cover provided. Examples of Dental costs for my family have been: A 3 surface Filling $157.00 A 5 surface Filling $172.00 First Comprehensive Exam $35.00 Subsequent Periodic Exam $24.00 Cleaning $64 Single Tooth Xray $28.00 Flouride Application $16.00 Total for us this year (10 months) has been $969.00 ($469 for my daughters 2 visits and $500 for my 2 visits). Last year we paid $984, but for the 3 of us visiting Dentists. We don't have Medical Insurance. We just pay as needed. An example of Dental cover available from one of the Main Insurers: These figures obtained from HCF under the "General Extras" plan. Services - HCF Pays - Limit per person per calendar year DENTAL Diagnostic Dental Examination - $29-$47 - 2 - general dentist Examination - $29-$47 - 1 - specialist dentist Single film x-rays - $23 - No limit Preventative Dental Removal of plaque - $27-$47 - 2 Application of fluoride - $20 - 1 Mouthguard (requiring model) - $92 - No limit Restorative Dental Metallic fillings - 1 surface - $35 - $300 Metallic fillings - 3 + surface - $54 - Adhesive filling - 2 surface - $50-$58 - Adhesive filling - 3 + surface - $60-$68 - Orthodontic(Depending on item numbers) General Dentist - $750 - Either up to $1,000 per lifetime for a general dentist OR $1,500 per lifetime for an orthodontist. - Full arch banding - two arches OR Orthodontist - $1,200 - - Full arch banding - two arches Oral Surgery Extractions - first tooth (same visit) - $44 - $200 Each additional tooth (same visit) - $28 - Surgical removal of unerupted tooth - $110 - Endodontic Services Complete preparation - 1 canal - $130 - Each additional canal - $60 - Periodontic Services Root Planning - general dentist - Nil - Nil Root Planning - specialist dentist Dentures (Depending on item numbers) Complete upper denture - Nil - Nil Complete lower denture - Nil - Nil Maintenance & repair - Nil - Nil Crowns & Bridges (Depending on item numbers) Bridges pontic indirect (per unit) - Nil - Nil Full crown veneered to metal indirect fused ceramic (per unit) - Nil - Nil Inlay / Onlay - 3+ surface - Nil - Nil Notes: 1 Initial X-ray only 2 Benefits for orthodontic treatment accrue at $250 per year after the first year of membership, up to a lifetime limit of $1,500 for orthodontics supplied by an orthodontist or $1,000 for orthodontics supplied by a general dentist. Individual services are paid for as they are incurred up to the maximum lifetime limit of $1,500 per person. Based on the above insurance example, with my 5 surface Filling costing $172 I would have only got back $68 in insurance. Some Insurers cover higher amounts, but presumably at higher premiums After all, the insurers are in business to make a profit out of there customers
