Basically im wanting to know my chances of getting into Oz and which path would be best for me to take.

I am 28 and an IT Systems Admin with MCSE, BSc in computing and 7 years experience.

From the research I have done myself the closest occupation on any of the SOL lists is on schedule 4 and its...

262113 Systems Administrator

So, basically I would like to know how to progress?!

After completing the points test on the immigration website I make it to come to 125 points. Im presuming I could apply for a 175 visa?

Any bit of help would be fantastic and much appreciated!

thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

To apply for a 175 your occupation needs to be on Schedule 3. If you obtain a skills assessment for an occupation on Schedule 4 then you will need State Sponsorship to file for a 176.

From what I've seen of the IT industry there's a number of codes that can fit for many people so it may pay to get advice from an agent on which code is most appropriate (both for your skills and also you chances of success with the visa).

There's also currently a trade-off between 175 and 176 visas. Latest advice from DIAC is that 175 applicants will take 18-24 months but you can settle anywhere in Australia. With a 176 you commit to a State for the first 2 years of residency but you should have your visa in 6-12 months (sometimes quicker) if the sponsorship is listed on a State Migration Plan.

Hope that helps and all the best with your app.

Thanks for that

Hmmm I really dont think I can make my skill set fit to schedule 3 so it looks like I would have to take 176.

However my confusion is, 262113 Systems Administrator appears on Schedule 4 but just looking at Victoria's SMP its not on there? Does it have to be for me to apply???

Sorry, just getting my head around this one!!!

thanks again!

Don't worry Dave, it took me a little while to decipher as well. In basic terms:

Schedule 4 is the full list of all occupations that are available for the Federal Govt and States to choose from for GSM visas.

Of these, DIAC has extracted Schedule 3 which is effectively the Federal Government's priority/sponsorship list. These can apply for a 175.

Each of the 8 States/Territories has then their list of the occupations they will provide State Sponsorship for. All States will now only sponsor occupations on their State Migration Plan, with a quota agreed with the Federal Govt. NSW are the temporary exception because they have yet to agree on their SMP and continue to provide State Sponsorships for nominated occupations in the mean-time - this may or may not become their SMP list.

Note also that each State has two SMP lists - there is also a regional list which is generally for more rural parts of the State outside the big cities, so there's a number of lists to work through.

There are some occupations on Schedule 4 that are not featured on Schedule 3 nor any of the SMPs published. There was a post on PIO recently which had some analysis of the total number of occupations and the number not sponsored by any State or the Federal Govt.

Here's another link that may be useful to see a summary of what each State is sponsoring:

http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/104460-anzsco-sponsorship-list-12-01-2011-a.html#post968166

So yes, in summary if your occupation is on Schedule 4 and does not appear on any of the States' SMPs then you will not be able to apply for State Sponsorship (and therefore a 176) at this time.

From what I understand the SMPs cover a fiscal year (July to June) so in July this year each State will publish a new SMP which may alter the occupations being sponsored by each State - it's up to them to determine their skills shortages each year.

Each State does have a limited quota for off-list nominations (sponsorships they will award for non-SMP occupations) but this is typically used for special cases.

If you have a job offer from an Australian employer who is willing to Sponsor you then it does not matter what Schedule your occupation is on. The experience of other PIO members seems to suggest that getting employer sponsorship is more difficult, but not impossible.

Hope that helps clarify things a bit. All the best.

Thanks !!!!!

Thats cleared things up A LOT for me!!

Our preference was actually NSW, so it might be worth waiting for them to release this?

I presume by... "...NSW...continue to provide State Sponsorships for nominated occupations in the mean-time" you mean the occupations listed on Schedule 3?

thanks again!

Dave,

I think NSW's existing list is taken from Schedule 4 and not Schedule 3.

See links below for the current NSW State Sponsorships including the Regional. NSW has traditionally sponsored fewer occupations and also required specialisations for some accounting and IT occupations. Cheers.

thanks for the links.

looking through them it looks like Sys admins are not anywhere to be seen. might have to rethink which parts of Oz we want to go to.

It looks like North or South Oz might have to be brought into consideration as their SMP mentions the systems administrator job title....

cheers!

Dave
