Human hunters inhabited Britain much earlier than originally thought

BRITAIN is famous for its cold and miserable weather, but imagine living there 780,000 years ago when winters were three degrees colder and Gore-tex had not been invented.

The discovery of 78 human artefacts, all more than 780,000 years old, in Norfolk shows when our ancestors left Africa 1.75 million years ago and spread into Europe they did not confine themselves to the southern, warmer regions of the continent as previously thought.

"These finds are by far the earliest known evidence of humans in Britain, dating at least 100,000 years earlier than previous discoveries. They have significant implications for our understanding of early human behaviour, adaptations and survival, as well as when and how our early forebears colonised Europe after their first departure from Africa," the research leader Chris Stringer, of the Natural History Museum, said. The artefacts, uncovered by coastal erosion, were mainly flint tools and flakes which were probably used for cutting or piercing.
