Pre-School

Hi Folks

We will be moving to Brisbane in September and need a little help regarding pre-school.

Our kids are 3 & 1. The 3 year old has been going to pre-school 3 mornings a week, funded by us and the government. When researching, Australia offers Kindy when kids reach 5 years old and then at 6 years old they go to primary school.

We would like our children to go to some form of pre-school from 3 years onwards as it is good for their development and we also get a rest / can go to work. Does anyone know what is available in Australia for this age group up until they can go to Kindy?

Thanks in advance

Australia has similar pre-school options, provided by private companies, but parents can get a reduction on cost up to about 85%, depending on income.

May people comment that these places are very difficult to get, and you need to be booked in years ahead, however my area of Brisbane seems to have no problems like that.

An example of one of the larger companies that provide this, is The ABC Learning Centres http://www.childcare.com.au/

In April 2005 the full fee, for our local one, for a 3yr old child was approx. $41 per day before the Centrelink Discount.

Regarding starting dates, in QLD:

Children born on or after 1 January 2002 will be eligible for the new preparatory year of schooling before enrolling in Year 1. They must be five by 30 June in the year they begin the preparatory year. (So depending on date of birth, that can be from age 4yrs and 5 months)

Children born between 1 January and 31 December 2001, including those who complete preschool in 2006, will enrol in Year 1 in Jan 2007.

Hope that has helped.

What part of Brisbane are you looking at ?

Hi ABC

Thanks for that info, it is really appreciated. Not sure where we will be living but probably within 8-10 kms of the CBD, so we will have to wait and see if there are any waiting lists.

Cheers again

Queensland offers a State Pre school program for children turning five the year they attend. As of next year the government in bringing in a pre year.(Like the other states.) It is a full time (five days a week) program. But children must turn 5 by June 30th that year.

Here is a link for the QLD Education website on the pre school topic:

http://education.qld.gov.au/etrf/faq-prep1.html

The original post mentioned Kindy.

Here in QLD, a Kindy is the the same as a child care centre.

In NSW it is the name for the year before Year 1.

Whilst in WA it is the year before Pre-Primary, which itself is the year before Year 1.

Confusing ?

Sure hope there are not too many waiting lists my lad needs to be in nursery so I can go to work?

Do you know per chance if State hospitals have child care facilities? I see I advertised in Private hospitals but not public.

Thanks in anticipation.
