Restrictions with State Sponsorship

I've made a couple of posts asking about the restrictions on movement out of a state within two years of being granted a 176, and I might have answered my own question.

I just received this off Paxus, a recruitment agency who specialises in IT.

Basically if you are sponsored by the State of VIC you will need to stay here and you'll find that as part of the recruitment process your visa will be verified so if it says VIC then you won't get offered any positions outside of VIC - DIAC have really clamped down on the rules around visa's and from an Agency's perspective they police it quite vigilantly now.

Given the above, I'm going to sit it out for a 175.

Dear Graemsay,

No easier way to flush a migration agent out of lethargy than to post complete twaddle sourced to a non-migration agent source. The truth is quite complex but nothing like you're being told, I hope their recruitment advice is better than their migration advice.

Cheers,

George,

Many thanks - could you refer us to the complex truth please?

Cheers!

Thanks George. As with Freebo I'd be interested in knowing.

It's possible that the recruiter has got mixed up with different subclasses of visa, but it does suggest that DIAC is being a bit more proactive than I thought.

Of course if IT recruiters in Australia are as good as the ones in the UK :biglaugh:

They couldn't be much worse, surely...

Freebo, is there any reason that you went for a 176 rather than a 175? If you've got an IELTS pass, and a reasonable amount of commercial experience then it shouldn't have been a problem to go unsponsored.

I had enough points and over 20 years high end experience to go unsponsored but at the time I applied SS was being processed much faster than CSL, we did a reccie and decided Melbourne was the best place for us, mainly down to cost of living vs pay (much higher vs a little lower). I know the Australian market very well and have worked for 5 years in IT over there previously, and I knew that for job availability and major IT projects its like 50% Sydney, 40% Melbourne and 10% for the rest, in what I do which is mainly contract systems integration for govt and large companies. So I was happy to apply to Vic for SS, apart from anything I like it better as a city.

Vic approved me and as soon as they did I got a c.o. and got a visa a couple of weeks later. I know I could have got a 175 if I'd waited a little longer but as 23/9/09 proves, anything can change at any time and I'm happy with a visa in the hand.

If you're at the start of the process you pays your money & takes your choice but the main thing most people worry about is the rules changing before their visa is approved, the CSL is due to be phased out in the first part of next year, what then for all of the IT applicants, and there are an awful lot starting to come through, especially from the sub continent.

Hi All

Some of you may know that a group of us are meeting with DIAC's Top Man in Europe on Monday 30th November, at Australia House in London.

I had a lengthy chat on the phone with the DIAC (Europe) man on the phone earlier in the week. He stressed that, "State sponsorship is the way to go...."

I'm doubtful because having watched hundreds of people busting a gut to secure State sponsorship from mid December 2008 onwards, it has helped loads of the early birds but it hasn't done a thing for those who didn't seek SS till later in the year.

I plan to ask more about this on Monday. The guy plainly has a reason for his insistence but the efforts that the State and Territory Govts have made so far was pretty comprehensively trashed on 23rd September 2009 as most of us know.

Once I have more information about this following Monday's meeting, I will post it on the Australia House thread.

I have mentioned it here in case the OP wants to consider the firm advice to me, given by a very senior DIAC honcho over the phone about 3 days ago.

Cheers

Gill

Thanks Freebo.

That's not a bad strategy, particularly as Australia has been tightening things up over the last twelve months. My worry is that the economy turns sour, and they metaphorically pull up the drawbridge.

Given that Dubai has just gone pop, that's a real risk.

Dear Graemsay and Freebo,

Sorry, if these issues really do affect you then by all means make contact with us professionally.

Cheers,

George,

Many thanks but I already have a professional contact I can ask if the need arises. To be honest I'm very happy with my 176 but I was intrigued by your comment that the issue was complex as it didn't seem so.
