We are trying to find an area in Sydney that is fairly low on rent (looking for a 2 bed apartment) and a nice neighbourhood, we have looked into some areas 'REDFERN' bad place 'no go area' apparently, ok so we find glebe which is not a million miles from redfern but kind of has a good vibe to it...any suggestions or advice would be great...

Try Alexandria, Erskinville way 10 mins from city....vibe is good....................nowhere near Sydney is "cheap" however you can find some bargains...............we moved out to Brighton 13 mins away from Sydney.........Brighton is not "cheap" BUT if you go inland to Alawah, St Peters, Carlton, South of the Airport you can get some decent places........my friends have just rented in allawah for $300p/w large 2 bedder with built ins and balcony try www.realestate.com.au

You're quite right about Refern and Glebe, ther's a world of difference between the two. A big difference is that Glebe is a harbourside suburb, with lots of public parkland on the foreshore. It has a bit of a trendy feel about it, with some great cafes and restaurants. Of the course the difference is reflected in the rents charged.

As well as suburbs already mentioned in previous posts, if you don't mind inner city living there's Newtown, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham, Summer Hill. Very cosmopolitan, lots of restaurants, pubs and cafes, and 10 to 15 minutes by train from the city.
