A big difference is that Glebe is a harbourside suburb, with lots of public parkland on the foreshore. It has a bit of a trendy feel about it, with some great cafes and restaurants. Of the course the difference is reflected in the rents charged. As well as suburbs already mentioned in previous posts, if you don't mind inner city living there's Newtown, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham, Summer Hill. Very cosmopolitan, lots of restaurants, pubs and cafes, and 10 to 15 minutes by train from the city.

Bellie
Hi Ben Just to add to your search try Stanmore. We stayed there for a while, although it was 4 years ago. Nice pub, couple of lovely cafes and a train station. Good luck with the search B
