ottg
I am new to this forum; feels like an intruder so be nice. Being an expat South African now staying in Perth (Snoozzzzville) that stumbled across this website and very intrigue by some of the very interesting threads I have read here, I also have some burning questions. a. Would you say that there is a difference between the UK culture and the Australian culture? b. How long did it take you to experience it c. How do you adapt to it d. Do you have many Oz friends that you socialise with outside work (what % split) I am eager to hear from you all! Regards
ali
Hi, I'm also in Perth, but the quietness suits me ... I was after a more relaxed/laid back lifestyle than what I had in the UK where work seemed to dominate. Socially I think there's a big culture difference in that I've found it to be a back yard rather than pub culture .. a 'good night out' is a good night in and for us that seemed pretty obvious right away. I find Aussies more 'straight speaking' they say what they mean and don't try to find a better way of saying it .. their bluntness took me by surprise at first. I think we've adapted as a family by going with the flow and not comparing Aus to UK too much, (it is inevitable at times though), Friends - about a 50/50 split of Brits and Others (Oz, NZ)
Guest tim_the_taf
what culture ? Ali's right, they don't socialise that much. Our local friends are in bed by 9pm and up about 5 am. E.g. my son's mate and his Dad were going to the movies with us on Sunday, but when we told them it started at 6.50 his Dad didn't go, started too late for him !! And he wasn't kidding. Their culture is really simple: outdoors, beach, sports etc. with beer, but tucked up in bed by 9pm. Forget theatre etc., very little of it and what shows there are are expensive. Billy Joel was on on Sunday, $352 a ticket !

Back where to..... Spend many years ago about 8 months in New Malden/Kingston in Surrey. We had a great time in the UK. Thank you for all the responses.
