Considering possibility of moving to Oz. Current employer has offices in north Melbourne. Any recommendations for good suburbs to look at accomodation? Any with existing Ex Pat communities?

I live in the South East Suburbs and made the commute to North Melbourne on a daily basis. It really is a long commute by car and it may be worth considering something closer. A lot of the staff lived in Melton and some in Gisbourne, they all said they were lovely places. Bayside is a lovely area and you have some stunning suburbs like Beaumaris and Sandringham, but it depends on your budget and what you need from a suburb.

Looking at the climate it appears not too far off the UK apart from being a bit drier. Is that a reasonable assumption?

It's a reasonable assumption. The winters are mostly milder (although this one isn't) but the summers are MUCH hotter. A lot of last summer for 35'C+, with a good few days over 40'C. We topped out at 45'C on one glorious day. The problem is the bets time of year is Winter when the Footy is in full swing

The biggest concern here in the Summer are the flies which are simply pandemic in the start and end months. Last Summer was awful.

Thanks, really useful information. I take it that you are an ex-pat from Cornwall? How long have you been out there and any regrets? we are a family with two kids. Any advice on things that we need to consider that may not be obvious to us at the moment?
