Guest gary12
Hi, Does anybody knowwhat the culture is in oz as regards self employed / sub contract work. I would like to work sub contract when I arrive for maybe 6-12 months whilst I am finding my feet. I would be looking for commissioning work on production lines, process plants etc.
Guest fatpom
I project manage plant installations & commissioning & regularly hire contract staff to install plant. A lot of fitting/fab work in this area will be found in contracting. Most commonly you work for a contract hire firm. Not sure of all the details such as tax etc. I assume the tax man will assess that you work for the contract hire firm not the company installing plant? You will be paid only for hours worked by the contract firm but the higher than normal rate should cover holidays, sick, super etc. You will have to organise this all yourself as if self employed.
