Nursing.. Shall I do my Masters in UK first?

Hi, I am planning to migrate to Oz. I am about to qualify as a BSc Adult Nurse but I am considering doing my Masters in Medical management before emigrating. Does anyone know whether it's worth it, or is it better to complete Masters in Oz?

Also, how much Nursing experience is necessary before applying for the visa?

Thank you

I don't know about experience etc in that field but I do know that most postgrad course for the next academic year (even distance learning) are now eligible for students to apply for a postgrad student loans company loan of up to 10k.

I'm assuming you're in the UK.

Sorry, perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. Yes I'm in the UK. I guess I'm asking people's opinion on whether it's better to do the Masters in the UK before emigrating or whether it's better to specialise and do post grad studies in Oz?

Thank you

A full masters takes 3 years

first year- post grad cert

Second year. Post grad diploma

third year masters

if you're employed through the nhs the don't find past diploma (and even certificate is a push) it's a lot more work and a much higher level than the bsc. Australian employers don't look at it as its not native. Do your preceptorship and maybe mentorship and go from there

Hi Vicky,

I'm a mental health nurse and near the end of my process for emigrating so although I'm in mental health, there are a few things that may help you decide. As far as I am aware, there are problems in Oz regarding newly qualified nurses (general and MH) having jobs because they have to have a preceptor type thing there and there are no where near enough places in comparison to newly q nurses. I'm heading to Adelaide and it's definitely a problem there but I think there are issues all over. You should get yourself at least 12 months post reg under your belt before you come over. Depending on the visa you go for, you may find that you need a minimum of 3 years experience as this was a requrement for the PR visa (189) I've gone for.

Having a masters won't make any difference to your desirability/ application but I understand that when I get to Oz and want to do my masters, I will be supported with time off and supported to apply for a grant, but will be responsible for funding the course myself. In the NHS this is currently paid for by my employer, although I've been turned down 3 years on the trot as my Trust is broke so doesn't invest in its staff!!

If time is on your side to emigrate, then I would consider getting the much needed experince and looking in to what the potential job market is like in your chosen area. I e-mailed people off the job pages for the state I am going to and was invited to go and look round and have a chat when we went out for a reccie last March. It was invaluable and told me a lot of things I didn't know or had false views on. Plus it's given me an "in" for when I get there job wise hopefully! Good luck.

I am also a mental health nurse in the UK and just completed my MSc in health professional education, unfortunately the teaching qualification is not recognised in oz so although I'm on the nmc register as a teacher that does not count for AHPRA so not sure how I would get on if unwanted to teach

@Becks22 have you secured a MH post yet?? What kind of work is in Adelaide?? I'm heading to perth and not much around at the moment

No job as yet but we are planning to head out in July so only just officially started looking last week! I'm applying for one job this week but I'm overqualified so not sure if that will go against me or not yet! I'm also sending off my CV to the nurse who showed me round as she is happy to circulate it for consideration to any forthcoming positions. I look weekly to see what jobs are out. This time last year there were tons that would suit my skills, this year so far it's been rather quiet....I hope it will hot up! I tried to do a PGcert for teaching too (got turned down due to funding as well) so glad I didn't as maybe I can just do it once I'm there.

Thanks Becks and louloubelle that's really helpful. I wonder if any of the post grad qualifications are recognised though? I fancy management in healthcare it's a year post grad course and I wonder if it's worth going straight on to do it while working part time.

Do either of you ladies know whether you have to have full or part time experience under your belt before applying?

Also you need to work for nhs at the other side if you want them to fund you. Read small print

depending what role you want will enter if while and when u want to go. I had thought about doing mine before I left but thought may be useful doing in aus as relevant to their healthcare...

?But I have P R thru hubby so not paying foreign course fees

i hade 2yr experience when I came out on whv and so glad as left to own devices dependent where u work. Assuming done venepuncture and IVs??
