Tax Advice - Calculating Gross v Net payments

Can anyone recommend a good Melbourne based Tax Consultant who can help with with personal income tax?

I will be arriving in Melbourne in Jan 2016 with my wife and two kids.

My package will consist of a fixed income portion and a variable monthly commission portion.

I am trying to work out how I will be taxed monthly when my Gross salary will change every month.

(Eg If I get paid $17k in the first month, will I receive the full $17k because I am under the first tax bracket or will they tax me proportionately on the assumption that I will earn $204k over 12 months?)

I will take a Novated Car lease which adds to the complexity.

Thanks in advance!

The tax system here is different from the UK.You will be taxed on what ever you earn, whether it be weekly or monthly, regardless of the tax bracket. So you will not receive the whole $17k in the first month. You will settle up at the end of the tax year being the 30th June every year when you do your tax return.

paycalculator.com.au is a very helpful and accurate tool.

Yes they will tax you on $17k in the first month (whichever month of the year it is) as if you are earning $204k in the tax year as a whole since the tax is worked out separately for each month (or week - many companies in Australia still pay weekly even for senior positions) and not on a cumulative basis. Where your salary varies from month to month you will definitely pay too much tax throughout the year and receive a refund after your tax return is submitted. The best calculator to use for how much you'll be paid net each month is the ATOs own one https://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/Tax-withheld-calculator/Individual-Non-business-Calculator.aspx although there are some commercial sites offering them too.

Note that if you move to Australia part way through the year you do not get the full tax free allowance - it's reduced proportionally - but you will still be entitled to the full amount of the lowest tax bracket but that won't be taken into account when your monthly tax deductions are taken so you'll get an even bigger tax refund in your first year.

The Novated Car Lease doesn't add much to the complexity. Just deduct the amount of the Salary Sacrifice from your gross pay and enter that number into the calculator. FBT is paid by the employer not the employee in Australia so you don't have to concern yourself with that too much (it does affect certain benefits and allowances for you but not your monthly tax). The number of dependents you have does impact your annual tax bill but doesn't affect the monthly tax deductions that are made.

If you have trouble with the online calculator PM me with the actual figures and I'll be happy to crunch them for you.
