Finding your new home Finding the perfect place to settle in Sydney may take a while. If you are scheduled to arrive in Sydney soon and have not yet secured a place, visit the following websites for short-term accommodation options: • http://www.sydney.com/accommodation • http://www.gumtree.com.au • http://www.airbnb.com • http://www.realestate.com.au • http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw WHERE TO START It is best to visit Sydney before you move here to get a feel for the city and its neighbourhoods. Taking the time to find the right home and suburb for you is important, as this will shape your experience of life in Sydney. If visiting first is not possible, here are some tips for getting an idea about Sydney and its different suburbs: • purchase a guidebook for Sydney – while these are aimed at shortterm visitors, they provide an overall feel for the city • look online at open source websites such as Wiki travel (http://www.wikitravel.org/en/Sydney) • search local council websites or follow a number of councils on social media • explore neighbourhoods and streets on Google Street View. GET TO KNOW SYDNEY LIKE A SYDNEYSIDER A number of websites tell locals about the latest bars, restaurants, events, exhibitions and shopping. You can either visit real estate websites online or contact a real estate agent direct. Some real estate agents specialise in finding homes for buyers. Some useful sites are: • http://www.realestate.com.au allows you to key in a suburb and search for a house in the price range you can afford • http://www.domain.com.au provides comprehensive listings of rental properties and houses and apartments for sale across NSW • http://www.homepriceguide.com.au gives the average prices for suburbs and towns as well as a breakdown of a suburb’s population, public transport, demographics and more.
