How easy is it to get ICT Jobs? Sydney vs Melbourne?

Recently got my 189 and planning a move to either Sydney or Melbourne. I am an ICT Specialist with over 9 years of experience in Systems Analysis and Management. I have a MSc from the UK, MBA, BSc and an array of ICT certifications (CISA, CISM, CISSP, MCITP .etc) I'm weighing my options between these 2 locations based on ease of getting an ICT job and ease of settling down generally. I have a family of 4 (Wife and 2 kids) and planning to move with all of them due to the short notice on my Initial Entry date (June 2015). I would love to settle in a mansionette within a quiet outer suburb neighborhood in future in either location. Any advise appreciated?

I will be in a similar position later on this year and a bit sceptical on landing a good job over there that matches mine here in London. But im going for more than the money so if I have to take a cut so be it.

I went to an Expo a few weeks ago and the state rep for Victoria quoted some very interesting facts about ICT in Melbourne and how Melbourne is expected to be bigger than Sydney in the not so distant future. Also Sydney is much dearer to live but the weather is not as good in Melbourne. Both cities have their pros and cons.

I left Perth 18 months ago and Australia's economy is more volatile than the UK so this could be way out of date but at that point a lot of IT people in Sydney couldn't get work and were applying for roles I was advertising.

I read on here recently that contract rates in Sydney have plummeted too which isnt a good sign.

That said there is probably not much between them jobs wise so perhaps decide based on other factors. Personally I'd choose Melbourne but everyone is different.

For Sydney I'd say that you could probably land a job but salaries are down and no way near London unless you have a very specific skill set. I work at a Bank and I manage a team of developers and currently we're focusing a lot on temporary contracts for around A$400/day. Whilst in 2011 I'd probably have paid A$650-700. At the moment I'd say it's an employers market as we can pick and choose. One of the other teams had over 200 applications for some infrastructure role.

If you're not coming for the money that is fine but Sydney is expensive - London prices almost, so you might need to adjust your lifestyle.

Sure is a quieter market than it was for ICT a couple of years ago. Part of the trick is to know you core expertise, research employers who will be interested in that, make the right approaches looking for conversations, then be relentless in maintaining contact and following up. Keep applying for advertised jobs for sure, but add to your potential luck with some well thought through relationship development work, hard yo do from offshore I know.
