Service Engineer Questions - License .......

Hi,

I am an experienced service engineer (over 20 years) and I basically repair, install and maintain equipment such as medical or printing equipment. I have completed a 4 year electrical apprenticeship and I have an HNC in electronic and electrical engineering.

I have never been an electrician or have ever held 17th edition etc as its never been relevant, plus its not something I want to do. However I cant get a definitive answer from anyone from agencies to companies to migration agents as to whether I need an electrical license to work in Oz - preferably Melbourne.

Are there any service engineers out there in Oz who have experience in this minefield. My migration agent is v hopeful that I will get a 189 visa using # 342315 below, but ideally Id like a job lined up before we go.

Any experiences would v v much appreciated

Seems the only person who is replying is myself !!!

After doing more research, the Oz term for Field Service Engineer is Service Technician!!

I hope this encourages more comments and help. Are there any PomsInOz Service Technicians out there who could shed any light on qualifications/licenses/tra etc etc

Ideally from Victoria.............

Hi Chubbs

Thanks for the reply

I've just had a good chat with my migration agent who is very confident I'll get a visa using ; 342315 - Electronic Instrument Trades Worker (Special Class) . He's also confident about me getting my ARTC and getting a job.

But when I ask him about electrical licenses he's saying "you aren't an electrician so you don't need an electricians licence" - IMO this is semi true, I'm not a sparkie but my job requires me to deal with electrical circuits - normally a maximum of mains voltage.

As far as I can see from job ads in VIC most ask for either 'A' grade, restricted or unrestricted elec licenses.

How did you overcome this??

What license do you have?

How did you get it?

What job do you do now?

Apologies for the numerous questions !!:chatterbox:

Hi Chubbs,

Through your help and my digging I'm 99% convinced I need a RESTRICTED ELECTRICAL LICENSE, no one can telly me this officially !!

This link http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/Electricity-Professionals/Licensing-and-registration/Restricted-Electrical-Workers-Licence is definitely applicable to me (and maybe you too)

It seems a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I doubt I'll get a job without it. It kind of looks like I'll need a job to get it (maybe) But I don't want to upsticks 100% without a job to go !?!

I'm about to speak to a new migration agent to see his take on it.

My general opinion of MA's are a bit like driving instructors. They guide you in how to pass your test (ie get a visa) but don't actually teach you to drive!! (ie how to get a job in oz)

Do you have a Restricted License Chubbs?

What kind of equipment do you work on?

What voltage (if any) do you deal with?

Ta (again)

Hi SweatySocky74,

How is it now with your Electrical License. I am also a Service Engineer with a degree so I'm very interested on the outcome of your application. Currently, I'm already a PR and would like to start doing my skill assessment for electrician. Also I have some couple of question. Appreciate if you could help.

1. How many payslips do we need to submit per employer?

2. If your previous company no longer exist but you still have contact with your ex-manager, can he do the employment statement?

3. For submission of documents, is it only by post? they don't have online submission?

4. I've heard that Future skills can review your documents first, without the payment, then you just pay if you are elligible. Is this true?

Regards,

Bryan
