  1. Im in a very similar situation to Binaj except Im; Occupation: 342315 - Electronic Instrument Trades Worker (Special Class) (Industrial Measurement and Control Technician) Installs, modifies, maintains and repairs complex electronic instruments and control systems which involve a combination of electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic principles. Registration or licensing may be required. Skill Level: The entry requirement for this occupation is the qualifications and experience. AQF Certificate III including at least 2 years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). At least 3 years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Tasks Include: examining and testing machines equipment, instruments and control systems to diagnose faults adjusting, repairing, and replacing worn and defective parts and wiring, and maintaining machines, equipment and instruments reassembling, test operating and adjusting equipment advising users of correct operating procedures to prevent malfunctions receiving messages by interpreting code and converting to plain language, and writing and typing messages for transmission monitoring radio traffic, and transmitting and receiving voice messages installing electronic instruments and control systems applying knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic principles in commissioning and maintaining control systems I dont seem to be able to get any answers from ANYBODY regarding qualification/trade recognition, do i need a licence?, how can i get a licence? Do i need to retrain as a sparkie just to get a licence for the job im doing now in the uk? My MA is only interested in getting me a visa rather than my future career in Oz. All very frustrating. Does anyone have any similar scenarios??????????
  2. Glasgow and Loch Lomond - definitely. We abs love St Andrews it has something for everyone inc kids and if your OH likes golf then it is heaven. Its a lovely place with nice people and no neds* !! * = scottish chavs
  3. Hi, I am in a similar position. I work on bespoke capital equipment in the print industry to a max 240V (involves electronic. electrical and mechanical) and I don't know anyone who can understand that i'm not an "electrician". Ive served a recognised electrical apprenticeship with a good college qualification but all i can see is electrician info. As far as I can work out id need a restricted electrical license which id need to almost retrain as a sparkie at college to acheive a pass to then work on any equipment that needs electricity. We just get classed as a "tradie" which is very inaccurate and frustrating
  4. HI, Ive deliberately not posted in the sparkies forum because its for electrical technicians like me. I'm planning to be an elec tech in Melbourne - repairing and maintaining industrial equipment - maybe medical or printing equipment. I'm pretty sure I'll need a REL not the full blown EL. I'm looking for anyone who has sat (and passed) the REL test in VIC. (vic uni maybe) Do you need a job first? Do you need to apply for it via ESV? I'm sure I have no chance (or do I say Buckleys chance) of getting a job without it. Vic Uni do a 5 days course for £600 which looks pretty good.(then another £300 for license!) http://www.vu.edu.au/courses/class-2-restricted-electrical-licence-tnrli Id really appreciate any feedback
  5. Hi Chubbs, Through your help and my digging I'm 99% convinced I need a RESTRICTED ELECTRICAL LICENSE, no one can telly me this officially !! This link http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/Electricity-Professionals/Licensing-and-registration/Restricted-Electrical-Workers-Licence is definitely applicable to me (and maybe you too) It seems a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I doubt I'll get a job without it. It kind of looks like I'll need a job to get it (maybe) But I don't want to upsticks 100% without a job to go !?! I'm about to speak to a new migration agent to see his take on it. My general opinion of MA's are a bit like driving instructors. They guide you in how to pass your test (ie get a visa) but don't actually teach you to drive!! (ie how to get a job in oz) Do you have a Restricted License Chubbs? What kind of equipment do you work on? What voltage (if any) do you deal with? Ta (again)
  6. Hi Chubbs Thanks for the reply I've just had a good chat with my migration agent who is very confident I'll get a visa using ; 342315 - Electronic Instrument Trades Worker (Special Class) . He's also confident about me getting my ARTC and getting a job. But when I ask him about electrical licenses he's saying "you aren't an electrician so you don't need an electricians licence" - IMO this is semi true, I'm not a sparkie but my job requires me to deal with electrical circuits - normally a maximum of mains voltage. As far as I can see from job ads in VIC most ask for either 'A' grade, restricted or unrestricted elec licenses. How did you overcome this?? What license do you have? How did you get it? What job do you do now? Apologies for the numerous questions !!:chatterbox:
  7. Seems the only person who is replying is myself !!! After doing more research, the Oz term for Field Service Engineer is Service Technician!! I hope this encourages more comments and help. Are there any PomsInOz Service Technicians out there who could shed any light on qualifications/licenses/tra etc etc Ideally from Victoria.............

  9. Hi, I am an experienced service engineer (over 20 years) and I basically repair, install and maintain equipment such as medical or printing equipment. I have completed a 4 year electrical apprenticeship and I have an HNC in electronic and electrical engineering. I have never been an electrician or have ever held 17th edition etc as its never been relevant, plus its not something I want to do. However I cant get a definitive answer from anyone from agencies to companies to migration agents as to whether I need an electrical license to work in Oz - preferably Melbourne. Are there any service engineers out there in Oz who have experience in this minefield. My migration agent is v hopeful that I will get a 189 visa using # 342315 below, but ideally Id like a job lined up before we go. Any experiences would v v much appreciated
